Subject Absorption and transmission coefs

Is it correct to assume that the sum of the absorption-, transmsission- and reflection coeffissients should be 1?
If so is it still correct to assume that the reflection coefissient equals (1-alfa - tau)^(1/2)
What would be the correct interpretition?
