Subject surround sound measurement?

Just a thought.... I can see a potetial market for measuring surround sound systems. Is it possible to encode the stimulus to a 5.1/6.1/7.1 format so that a single coax/optical connection is all that is needed from computer to the amplifier of a surround system? Perhaps the logswept sines would survive the data compression schemes better?
This way, a ton of surround sound users could test their entire system by only setting up a single omni microphone. And the results of tweaking eq, levels and delay could be readliy seen in mls plots (as compared to doing simple measurements on the 5.1 analog inputs found on most amps that bypass internal processing)
best regards Knut Inge
