Ukrainian Museum of Folk Art and Craft: Woodworks as decorative plates, boxes, vases, candlesticks...
Hutsul Woodcuts
The museum's collection of woodworks shows development of carving
during three centuries. Woodworks was used as architecture elements, furniture,
farming tools, things for everyday living, and musical instruments. In
major cases carving elements were two six leafs rosette and cross
with a few frames which create a center of composition.
Here is the work of decoration interior of house from Biloberezivka village.
This work was made in 1836 by Danyl Akoliuk. His ornamental design consist from
religion elements (rosettes and crosses) and animalistic elements (birds,
mermaid...) which suppose to protect home and family life from evil.
(Pagan and Christianity live together on this land for many centuries).

The museum has collection
of works made by Yurij Shkribliak (1822-1884). His works consider to be
the classical works of Hutsul's cravings. He created things for everyday
living, and major feature of his works were craving and simple inlaid
works . For inlaid work he used horn, metal wire or nails. His original
principle of decorations was dividing big areas for smaller parts.
This parts looks like geometrical figures: square, circle, rectangles,
semicircles... and there was the base principle for the next generation
of artists. You can see on the pictures example of his work barrel,
bottle and two cups (tumblers). His sons Vasyl', Mykola, and Fedir
inherited his talent and developed this art . Everyone has his unique
style of work, and they used for inlaid works glass beads, horn, metal,
different kind of wood, nacre. Here is a sugar bowl made in 1905 by Vasyl'
Shkribliak.

At the
end of XIX century at beginning of XX century creating plates and dishes
lost there meaning because of developing industry production and ceramics.
The specifics of items, created at that time, were too much inlaid
works and sometimes craving disappear at all.
In modern time this art continue to develop. Along with folk artists work
professionals whose works are based on folk traditions. The special features
of those works are only curving with simple inlaid works. You can see works
of V.Guz made in 1979 and 1981. In the present times woodworks are used for home decorations.
