Ukrainian traditional embroidery stitches: cross and "nyzynka"
Cross & "Nabiruvannia"
There are more than hundred technique of Ukrainian embroidery. Some
embroidered works as blouse, tablecloths, napkins can combine a few techniques
in the one work. Here we introduce two of the most popular technique of
embroidery as cross and "nabiruvannia".
Cross is one of most widespread technique in Ukrainian embroidery. It
is simple and convenient technique to implement patterns. The beauty
of work made by this technique depends from exact counting
threads on fabric and direction the top stitches (the top stitches suppose
to lie on the same direction). On first step we fixed thread on the fabric
and put in the needle on the fabric on diagonal direction by two
threads down and put out the needle in two threads from right to the left.
On the step 2 put in the needle on the right corner on the first stitch
and put out the needle on the four threads from the right to left. First
cross appear on our work. On step 3 put in the needle on the down left
corner of our first cross and put the out needle on the two threads from
the right to left. On step 4 put in the needle on the left top corner of
previous cross and put out the needle on the four threads from the right
to left. Appears the row of crosses. For creating some crosses on the diagonal
direction, reaped the two first steps, and on next step (step 5) put in
the needle on the right corner on the first stitch and put out needle on
two threads on the left from down left corner of first cross. On step 6
put in the needle on the two threads down from the down left corner of
first cross and put out the needle on two threads from the right
to left. On step 7 put in the needle on the down left corner of previous
cross and put out the needle on two threads left from the down left corner
of the previous cross.

In "nabiruvannia" stitches are made parallel to the horizontal threads of fabric.
Stitches are based on the even number of threads (2, 4, 6 - it depends
of fabric thickness ) and made from left to right close to each other.
On step 1 you fixed thread on the left corner of your work and make
first stitch. After that you put in the needle on the end of stitch and
put out the needle on the one thread higher on fabric in the middle of
the first stitch. On the step 2 put in the needle on the two threads on
the right of your work and put out the needle on one thread higher on the
fabric. Make stitches according to the pattern. On step 3 put in the needle
on the two threads to the right of fabric and put out the needle
one thread down on the fabric in the middle of previous stitch. On step
4 make stitches according to the pattern down of the fabric. On step 5
you can see how to use different color of your work according to the pattern.
