Ukrainian Museum of Folk Art and Craft: Embroidery
Hutsul Embroidery
Embroidery is one of the oldest
and favorite Ukrainian craft. Embroidery at beginning was made on the clothes
near neck, sleeves, and cuffs and suppose to protect people from evil. Later embroidery
has decorative meaning for clothes.
The Kolomyia's museum have exhibits from different regions and different
villages. All regions has their own tradition of decoration clothes, their
own technique of embroidery, their own colors. The embroidery made in Kosiv
region are in hot yellow colors and made by technique call "half cross".
Embroidery from Pystyn'village made by cross technique and made
in orange, red and black colors. You can see on the picture one of the
embroidered sleeve of woman shirt made by P. Diakiv in 1930 in village Pystyn' ( Kosiv region).
You can see sleeve of woman shirt which was made in 1900 in village Verbovets'
(Kosiv region) by cross technique and women blouse from village
Chornoguzy (Chernivtsi region) made by F. Matsiuk in 1959.

In present time this tradition
continue to develop and embroidery are used for decoration
clothes, table clothes, towels, napkins, pillows. H. Herasymovych (1889-1974) from Kosiv city
was good embroidery master and also big entuziast of collection
the best examples of carpenting and embroidery. You can see her towels made in 1965
and 1966 accordingly by technique called "nyzynka".
One more example of embroidered towels made by M. Saliuk in 1970
by "nyzynka" technique from Iv-Frankivs'k.
