Hi Jean,
Your story sounds a lot like my mother's. As a result of her parents not introducing her so heavily into Ukrainian cultural practices and language in an attempt to assimilate into American culture, she raised my sister and myself with very strong cultural traditions. I attened Ukrainian school from 3rd-8th grade where I leared to speak, read, & write Ukrainian and learned the history and traditional Ukrainian dance. My dream had always been to visit the country of my grandparents (as my father is Ukrainian as well.) I was somewhat reluctant to just pick up and go to Ukraine without any contacts or prior knowledge of the counrty or any real plans. Last year, I found a program in L'viv run by the University of Kansas that teaches language and contempory politics and economics of Ukraine. I went on this 6 week progam this summer and it was the best choice I have made in my life thus far. The progam was so well organized and we got an opportunity to learn so much about the culture. Also, just to live in Ukraine for 6 weeks was the most amazing feeling for me. We also traveled to Kiev, the Carpthians, and Odessa. I would recomend this program to you if you are interested. If you would like to know more send along an email. If a 6 week program is not exactly what you would be interest in, I would be more than happy to give you some information about visiting there: where to stay, how to get around, etc.

Take care,
Melissa
