Subject So happy to find this site

Date Mon Feb 11 2002 15:12

Author Lesia Baumann (hbaumann@almanet.net)

I have been separated from Ukrainian heritage for many years. I am child of Ukrainian I immigrants.
I grew up in New York City and there was Ukrainian culture everywhere. However, as an adult, and far from where I grew up,
I have lost touch with my culture. There is nothing Ukrainian available here. Most people don't even know what Ukrainian is.
I would like to share my heritage with my children. Unfortunately, I didn't do much of this when I was younger and they were
younger. Now I have been looking for things that I could share with them. I only wish I had found this site a few weeks ago.
Anyway, now that I know you are here, I will be able to purchase beautiful items for all my family, not only my children.
Your products are beautiful. I'm excited knowing I can now find special gifts for everyone.

I too am excited about finding this site. Such beautiful crafts...Viewing this site was like going back in time to my childhood. The embroidery brought me back to watching my mother work on pieces that I've treasured since her passing. The wooden bowls and plates, back to the Catskill mountains in New York where we would spend several weeks each summer on a farm owned by Ukrainian friends that also where skilled in wooden crafts. And of course the colorful Ukranian Easter eggs which would always be displayed on the Holiday table. Such special memories. It's wonderful to find a place to be able to purchase "special memories" that I too can pass on to my children....

Enter your message here. This time of year was so important to my mother.Baking bread and dying eggs was always number one on her list for Easter. It'sad yet true most of us are to busy to do all the traditional things our parents and grandparents always made time to do. I am guilty of it myself, yet I hope we do not lose our Ukrainian heritage in the U.S.in the years to come.

My mother was always busy this time of year baking bread and dying eggs. She seemed to do it all with so much pleasure. So many of us have lost touch with our Ukrainian heritage.I am guilty of it myself.I hope we can all find time in our childrens lives to teach them alittle something of our customs and history so that they too can pass down to their own children before we all forget.

Finding this site has been a joy. It brought back so many of my most favorite childhood memories. Moving so far away from the Ukrain community that was always there left a void in my life. This page reawakens that side of my life. It also helps me show my children things i grew up with. Thank You sooooooooooooo much

Although I was born and raised in the United States, I am first and foremost Ukrainian, and I would die for Ukraine. I am proud to bleed yellow and blue. My late father came from Kiev. My parents could read and write Ukrainian, but we were never taught. My most burning desire is to step on Ukrainian soil. I want to have my feet on her soil, and my hands in her soil. May Ukraine remain in our hearts FOREVER !!!

Hi Jean,
Your story sounds a lot like my mother's. As a result of her parents not introducing her so heavily into Ukrainian cultural practices and language in an attempt to assimilate into American culture, she raised my sister and myself with very strong cultural traditions. I attened Ukrainian school from 3rd-8th grade where I leared to speak, read, & write Ukrainian and learned the history and traditional Ukrainian dance. My dream had always been to visit the country of my grandparents (as my father is Ukrainian as well.) I was somewhat reluctant to just pick up and go to Ukraine without any contacts or prior knowledge of the counrty or any real plans. Last year, I found a program in L'viv run by the University of Kansas that teaches language and contempory politics and economics of Ukraine. I went on this 6 week progam this summer and it was the best choice I have made in my life thus far. The progam was so well organized and we got an opportunity to learn so much about the culture. Also, just to live in Ukraine for 6 weeks was the most amazing feeling for me. We also traveled to Kiev, the Carpthians, and Odessa. I would recomend this program to you if you are interested. If you would like to know more send along an email. If a 6 week program is not exactly what you would be interest in, I would be more than happy to give you some information about visiting there: where to stay, how to get around, etc.

Take care,
Melissa

Although it's been a year since someone posted on your discussion BB I want to say that I wish my grandmother had been more interested in her heritage. She was Polish, and her father had been in the prussian army. I don't remember her ever talking about her parents . I feel like I've lost out on alot.

File: Spondo.pdf

Enter your message here.Hello
President of the French Slavic Chorus of Toulouse (France) , I allow myself to solicit you
En effect we have in our repertory a song which circulates in the french choral societies as being a Russian song, but it is not obviously because we are several in the chorus knowing Russian...
After many research I come to identify this song in film of Parazhdanov "the horses of fire".It is the song of Ivan and Palagna 's marriage (approximately 1 H after the beginning of film) it starts with Réva... etc... In this film one finds mixed Russian and Ukrainian and Hutsul (I suppose as in this song because it is not Russian nor Ukrainian... )... Do you know somebody who could translate it for us?
With my anticipated thanks.
Nicole
PS I send to you the song in pdf .
The words of the song that I send to you are roughly those of the song of film because it was taken again by the French singer Hugues de Courson and it is this song which we have in our repertory

Conan, we are also in finding information on how to make these beautiful eggs for our grandchildren for next easter. We were watching Fox New this morning and they had a special on explaining the process. they used a scribe to put designs on eggs and a pump to remove the yoke and white and stated that the tools needed to do this could be purchased from a craft shop(Ukrainian) however we live in a rural setting and know of no craft shopes and if you find where ther are any in the Hershey,Harrisburg or Reading pennsylvania area or any area that would have these items please share the information with us or any other 's in this discussion group kmows please e-mail us. Looking for traditional Ukrainian gift idea's, with a modern feel. She speaks Ukrainian, and used to go to church as a child. I need a modern approach, so nothing like pysanka, cross, or plates. I was thinking something like a jewelery box, cook book, or jewelery that isn't too expensive. I know nothing about the Ukraine. I am currently seeking knowledge of the culture.

I am looking for more Ukrainian jewelry. I know that most of it is gold but I prefer silver. I found one piece at a shop in Lisle but I would love to find more from other local shops. Somewhere close to the 60532 zip code. I am very proud of my background and I am very happy to still enjoy the foods and traditions during the holidays.

Anyone know of a place or two?
