Hutsul Clothes & Accessories
The folk clothe consist from many component and connect many kinds
of folk art. The women clothe consist from shirt, skirt, jacket,
head cover (wreath, shawl...), footwear (boots or shoes called "postoly"), adorning,
belts, bags... For sewing women clothe were used thin flax or hemp
fabric and cloth was using for top clothes. A shawl and belts was weave
separated and sometime was decorated by laces. The women's shirt was embroidered
on front and on sleeves. Sometimes jackets were made from sheep
leather and decorated by appliqué from another leather
or by wool, or silk threads.
The men's clothe consist from shirts, pants ,jackets, belt, stick... A
men's shirts were wearing on top of pants and girdle by leather belt.
The men's shirt has embroidery on the front and on the cuffs. The technique
of embroidery the same like in women's shirts. A hat sometimes was decorated
by wool lace, feather from wild roost, or belt made from leather
with metal inlaid work.
You can see Hutsul's clothes made in XIX century from Iavoriv village and
the clothes made at beginning of XX century from Kosmach village. You can
see the sleeveless jacket with leather appliqué on the clothes from Dyhtynets'
village made at the end of XIX century and beginning of XX century.
Many ideas from the past continue to develop in modern modeling peoples
clothes. You can see modern woman dresses made by H. Vintoniak in 1980.
For creating this clothes was used weaving and embroidery.

The accessories for clorhes was made from metal, glass beads, and leather.
The art work from metal has old traditions. The metal were used for made
home items, weapons, items necessary for rural life, and for
clothes decoration. There are so original form and ornament from
metal for men and women accessories. You can see decoration for man
hats made at beginning of XX century from leather and decorated by metal.
Men belts made from leather and decorated by metal with metal buckle from
Richka village. One of them made in 1935 by M.Medvidchuk and another made
in 1925 by D. Kishchuk Woman necklace made from metal at XIX
century in Putyla city and woman bags made in XIX century in Verchovyna
region from leather and metal.

Special interest in woman accessories are "sylianka" and "hardan".
A "sylianka" is made from glass beads by putting them on threads and rap
together. A "hardan" is necklace made from glass beads in the weaving way. You can see two "hardan"s made from glass beads at
beginning of the XX century in Kolomyia region.
The old kind of folk art is items made from leather. The jackets, man's
and woman's bags, belts, shoes ("postoly") were made from leather and decorated
by metal or geometrical ornament by imprint. The modern artists collect
and developed tradition from past and create new items for everyday living
according to the new esthetic dements. There are some works modern artist
made in second half of XX century. The " postoly"s made in Kosiv
region in 1975 by M.Pertsovych from Verhnij Bereziv village and in 1974
by K.Hudymiak from Kosmach village. There are bag and folder made by R.Prysiazzniuk
in 1976 from Kosiv city, belt made in 1973 by R. Strynadiuk from Kosiv
city, and Perth made in 1967 by I. Myklashchuk from Bruits village. There
are other items made in Kolomyia city; bag made in 1981 by A.Kisylychuk
and belt, purse, and glass case made by G. Vax in 1977.
