We have received numerous inquiries over the past two weeks regarding the terrorist threat to our drinking water supplies, and whether the Multi-Pure would protect people. We have paid attention to news reports and TV information.
And we have received information from people who have discussed this with Multi-Pure President Alvin Rice and interviewed a medical doctor specializing in infectious disease from Beth Israel Hospital.
We can tell you that Multi-Pure is working on a press release that will state the official company policy, and you should receive it in your Streamer Magazine in several weeks. Here's what we have gathered so far:
There are two types of threats of this type: biological and chemical weapons. Biological terrorism would probably involve either anthrax (a bacteria) or smallpox (virus).
We have also heard the word "cholera" and "plague". Most authorities agree that putting these contaminants in the water supply would not be the most efficient way to disperse them. Most authorities say they are much more concerned about dispersal through the air, ingestion through inhalation. If that is the case, then obviously, the Multi-Pure would have no impact.
In speaking with the medical specialist I learned that the anthrax spore is relatively large, so if it were in the water the .5 micron pore size of the Multi-Pure would effectively filter it out. Keep in mind, most public water supplies are chlorinated. The purpose of chlorination is to disinfect water, to kill bacteria or viruses. So most biological agents would not even survive the routine chlorination.
Chemical toxins such as herbicides or pesticides could conceivably be sprayed or dumped in a reservoir, but again the sheer size of a reservoir the size of the Quabbin (Boston area's water supply) would dilute it so much that there is probably little to fear. Smaller ponds or reservoirs would be more vulnerable. Also, keep in mind that the Multi-Pure is highly effective and certified to remove chemicals, volatile organics, herbicides and pesticides, so it would probably be very effective in those situations.
However, we make no claims. We don't know which poison the enemy might use. We don't know the target or the concentration. So we cannot, and will not make any definitive claims for the Multi-Pure beyond what we already claim, and that is based on our extensive NSF certification.
In these uncertain times, it is not a bad idea to be prepared as best we can. That might mean storing water just in case there is an emergency. This is a good idea for both natural and man-made emergencies, as we discussed during Y2K preparations. Just remember to not let it sit for more than a month-constantly renew your emergency stock with fresh Multi-Pure water.
We have no need or desire to alarm people any more than they already are. We do not expect terrorists to target our water supplies. We pray that they do not.
