This is a place for friends, relatives and anyone else to post a comment before, during or after Tim and Jonny's Big Summer Trip 2002. Let us know: Is Tim crazy for taking on all that driving? Is Jonny crazy for taking on all that time with Tim? What happens if Jonny decides in Pennsylvania that he'd rather go to summer camp after all?

Do you have any suggestions for places to visit? Places to eat? Routes to drive? Ways to stay awake behind the wheel? Would you like us to come and stay with you? Would you rather we just do a driveby and you can wave at us as we go past? Do you want to come along on part of the trip? If you could, where would you like to ride along?

Tim and Jonny: Of course you are welcome to bunk here in Rio Rancho for one night or more, using the indoor facilities (running water) or sleeping outside in Sierra's playhouse if you feel obliged to rough it. I'd suggest less time in California and Las Vegas and more in Arizona and New Mexico. Route 66, Indian and Spanish history, good hiking, great (and affordable) food, and I even know a few places with good beer. I'd also suggest working a little on those mapping skills - the Grand Canyon is in Arizona ;>)

Look forward to having you here in Greensboro. I'm sure the gang here at Sky can plan something around your visit. Our target date to present the October issue to Delta is either the 15th or 16th, so some of us may be out of the office one of those two days. The Bats are in town the fifth through the 12th, but have an off-day on the 13th and then hit the road. (So skip Concord and get here on the 12th for some Red Oak and baseball.) I can't offer a place to stay (one advantage to us moving into a very small house ;-)), but I can check around to see what options there are. Keep us up-to-date.

No worries about the small house. You've got a front yard big enough for our tent, don't you? Your neighbors won't mind if we string our laundry, will they? All we have to do is fire up the hibachi, dig a slit trench over in the tulips, set up the bug-zapper, get out our lawn chairs, and we'll be fine.

what, pray tell, is in concord that's worth stopping for? Gary's barbecue in nearby China Grove has gone from hickory to gas, so you'd want to go a little further and stop at Speedy's in Lexington, NC, if you're looking for a fix of outside meat. Lexington is, after all, the BBQ capital of the free world. The confederate prison is in Salisbury. The Railroad museum is in Spencer. That only leaves Concord attractions such as The Harley Davidson Superstore; the Concord Speedway (demolition derby, anyone?); the BassPro Shop; or Concord Mills discount shopping plaza (stock up on sox and underwear). 'fess up, Tim, which is it?

Your trip looks great, but not nearly enough time in some of my favorite places in the midwest. I grew up in Ohio and went to school at Northwestern, and have family in Wisconsin, so all of that is familiar territory. I'd highly recommend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Lots of really quirky stuff like John Lennon's childhood belongings and Kiss monster platform boots. Then head to the Flats for some of the Cleveland microbrews. The drive from Cleveland to Chicago is beastly boring, but once you get to Chicago, heaven! Be sure to take Lake Shore Drive into town, not the Dan Ryan expressway, because it's the prettiest view of Lake Michigan and the skyline. I could tell you twenty things to do in The Second City, but you'll enjoy whatever you do.

Dear Tim and Jonny:
Brian Head is located 26 miles from Cedar City, Utah, near Bryce National Park, Cedar Breaks National Park, and Zion. It is a beautiful, wild area much as it was when the pioneers came through. Many of the scenes are familiar since the area has been used for decades to film western movies and TV shows. Our condo is about 3 hours from Las Vegas, north on I-15. We hope that you come to San Diego for a few days and leave for Brian Head, heading East, from here. It is 161 miles from the North rim of the Grand Canyon, a must see, so you could head south from there. We could caravan with you to the condo and see you off from there. The National Parks have many hiking trails and spectacular scenery. Keep us posted. YOur web site is cool.

Author Penny Pink (PPink@aol.com)

As for the great adventures of Johnny & Tim, sounds like a ripoff of the circle trip I did with my boys when they were a bit younger than Johnny. Big difference though. You guys are planning the whole trip out. The Circle trip started with Cody whinning that he had never had any "adventures" like I had. My response was, you want adventure, I can arrange that. Just go on a trip and don't plan anything more than the direction you want to travel. So, Cody, being the cocky little shit that he is, says, 'okay, let's go to the ocean.' So, I take off three weeks from work, we gas up the Suburban, load up the camping equipment, I hand them an atlas and say, "see that blue stuff, that's the ocean. see those red and black lines, those are roads. you tell me which highway to turn on. I'll drive, you navigate." We (I) drove three thousand miles, pretty much the western loop of your trip, in three weeks. We camped twenty nights and stayed in hotels four or five nights. Even saw the ocean...

Ah.... brings back some fond memories. Maybe I'll come too...

Date Sun Apr 7 2002 18:55

Author Penny Pink (PPink@aol.com)

Of course you and Johnny are welcome at the Pink Flophouse for wayward travelers, traveling adult children, and adult children with condemned apartments. Cody's room upstairs has become the guest room of late. Jeremias has used it so far this month for a couple of weeks when the backside of his apartment house collapsed and they condemned the building. Thankfully it was repaired and he moved back out. Cody came through on his way to Death Valley to go rock climbing for spring break. His buddies had an accident on the way down from Moscow, so he laid over here for a day waiting for them to get here. Thankfully everyone was okay, and they got off on their trip in one piece. Hopefully they will come back through next weekend in the same shape...

Jeremias is contemplating living on a sail boat for the summer and doing construction in the San Juans, or perhaps a stint with Americorps. Cody is applying for jobs far and wide, but so far it seems to be a toss up between crop dusting or working as a guide with an outfitter on the Salmon river for the summer. I live to live vicariously through my children and friends these days....

At any rate, there will be room at the inn. We should be around in July. My garden should be producing by that point, so come hungry and thirsty. And God willing by that point hopefully the brewery will be moved into the warehouse on S. 1st. Can't wait to hear about your adventures. Sounds like fun.

The best bit was a commercial poking fun at The World Cup and how little interest Americans had in the whole affair. Followed by a good meal at a Vietnamese Restaurant and now a quiet cup of tea at home interupted by pleas for Ruffian to get 'off'!!!

NB here. We guffawed at the World Cup bit, but Lizzie really liked his description of the life in the Berserk-shires. Weather was perfect for an evening out on the lawn, and Leslie has really scored with a beautiful house. So we are feeling fine tonight. Hope you are as well. I'm writing this on Sunday night in Milwaukee. We're staying with some people who didn't know we were coming. But we didn't know we were going to their house til we called them about an hour before we got there. They weren't home and didn't get the message, so we got to their house about the same time they did, back from a lake weekend. They let us in anyway.

We went from Bagwills on Friday night in Pittsburgh to some cheerfully self-confessed aging hippies in Cleveland on Saturday night. The best of both worlds right here in America, just a couple of hours away on the Interstate.

As for bears, I think you have to do what Davy Crockett did. Just grin. By the way, where as Ruffian, who is otherwise so heroic with chipmunks and squirrels, during this encounter?

Subject Mel & Deirdre Welcome to SF (directions)

Date Sat Jul 20 2002 23:07

Author Mel (mel@mashman.com)

Hi Tim and Jonny,

Just wanted you to know that we are preparing for the travelers extraordinaire visit to the Harrington/Mashman lodge. We understand the reservation is for three and that the party will be come as you are.

Deirdre left a lengthy phone message. I'll add a tad. I acquired two tickets (total) to the Giants/Cardinals game at PacBell Park on Monday night. The game starts at 7:15PM and must leave the house by 6PM. We do not know your time of arrival at our establishment and we do not know what time Lizzie is arriving at the airport Monday. Here are some options:
You are welcome anytime Sunday, Monday or whenever. If you can get here by 5PM Monday, you can choose two to go to the old ball game. Deirdre has offered to go to the airport to pick up Lizzie. Alternatively I could take Jonny to the game and you and Deirdre could go to the airport. Whatever works depending on your interest in America's pastime and a great ballpark. I can always go to PacBell.

If you cannot get to our place by 6PM Monday, we have a problem that we will address by telephone. Perhaps a neighbor will be home with a key. We will both be home all day on Monday prepping the lodge for the onslaught. Remember that ciaos is fun and we will have a wonderful time. We are looking forward to your visit!!

We also need to know what type of car you have. If it is a monster SUV, we may have a problem with parking, but there is always a solution. If it is a normal car or wagon, we will put ours on the street (it has a special neighborhood sticker) and you can park yours in our paid garage (the lodge for some reason came without a garage). Street parking is a challenge and you would not want to have anything visible. Note: you can bring up any valuables to the lodge. We'll find room. The garage is safe, but bicycles, computers, etc. should come inside.

So, we need three things from you: Time of arrival, type of vehicle, Lizzie arrival time and who wants to go to the old ballgame. (OK four things).

We STRONGLY recommend you avoid the approach to SF before 10AM and between 4PM and 7PM. It is a parking lot.
Directions to the lodge:
I presume you are coming from the East and you can find your way across the Bay Bridge simply by following signs to San Francisco.

On the Bay Bridge stay in the left lane and get off at 5th Street exit (there is another street mentioned, but I forgot its name. Not to worry it says 5th as well). It is the 2nd left exit in the city. You will wind around on the off ramp and come to a signal (Harrison Street) where you will turn left. You will travel past 6th to 7th street where you will make a right turn.
Follow 7th Street into the city past Howard, Mission, and Market Streets. Just after Market Street you will be forced to make a left turn (T intersection) and then want to make a quick right turn (kind of like an "S") onto Leavenworth Street. This street has linked signals and you will be be traveling through the hard luck part of SF. You will pass Bush (not difficult), Pine, and eventually get to California St. It has cable car tracks.
Turn left on California and go one street to Hyde Street. Turn right on Hyde Street. Proceed past Sacramento St. and you will be at a stop sign (Clay St.). Go straight and we are the 3rd lodge on the left hand side of the street at 1317 Hyde. It is a Tudor style building. We live on Hyde between Clay and Washington. You can either pull into one of the driveways on the right or make a u-turn and park in the closer bus stop to do a quick unload. Ring our bell #6 and we will march down for traditional greetings and to help you unpack. Keep your flashers on in the bus stop and have Jonny stay with the vehicle. The fine is nasty, but you will not get a ticket unloading. I'll escort you to the garage. Showers, laundry, food and two buddies await your arrival.

Cheers,
Mel & Deirdre

You can see Yucca Flats where some serious fireworks have gone off.

Hello Tim and Johnny.

I've been enjoying your travelogue...with a smile as I read your adventures and imagine the rear end of the Volvo wagon gradually sagging under the weight of Johnny's arsenal. I've been tuning in to Car Talk hoping to hear a "live" update from you with some question about...how long it takes for (uh-hum...fireworks) to spotaneously combust when left in the back of a Volvo wagon with the windows rolled up while parked in the desert sun (answer...not long!) - what a picture that would be.

Cherrie visited Ridgewood a couple of weeks after you all (y'awl)met on I-80/visited Pittsburgh on Day 1, and several people stopped her downtown to say that they had read about the McDonalds rendez-vous in Johnnies article.

I enjoyed your visit here in Pittsburgh and was honored to be your first stop on the trip (location..location..location). I've still got a few cold Yuenglings here in the fridge...and it's going to take me a while to finish the remaining 3 cases on my own...so if you have the urge (or make a wrong turn) and find yourselves in Western PA on the way back, there will be a cold one waiting for you.

Sounds like a great trip and a great summer for the Harpers. Travel safe.

2. number of different kinds of beer consumed on trip by Tim
3. number of fireworks ignited on trip by Jonny
4. number of counties/states where Jonny broke the law igniting fireworks on trip

1 On a trip of this kind are you permanently 'on the road' and is there a series of roads, or just one road (long and winding or otherwise)and if so how do you get off it if you want to go somewhere else?
2 After 10,000 miles, what do you think of America, I mean really think, or is that not a question that any true American needs to answer?

It's interesting that your heavy questions, dude, usually seem to home around or after midnight London time.
To answer them:
1. There are roads, and there is a road. That is the road that we are on. As one of America's greatest philosophers, Yogi Berra, once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." The one you take is the road. The one that is outside your motel window, the one that takes you to where you are going -- even if you aren't sure where you are going -- is the road. There are roads, but they are roads not taken. Yet.
2. As for the meaning of America, yes, we have discovered and developed some strong ideas and distinct impressions. But you're going to have to wait for the movie...

Lincoln logs miles
Reliever returns for third stint with Pirates
By Chris Shuttlesworth / MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Saturday morning, Mike Lincoln was in Memphis, Tenn., where the Triple-A Nashville Sounds were playing a series. Later that afternoon, he was the losing pitcher in the Pirates' 8-3 loss to the Giants after allowing five runs, including a grand slam to Benito Santiago.

"I enjoyed getting back on the mound," said Lincoln, recalled after Friday night's game for his third tour of duty with the Bucs this season. "I would rather not have given up five runs and given the team a loss, but I always give my best when I go out there."

Lincoln's return started auspiciously, as he struck out the first four batters in relief of Kris Benson, who gave up three unearned runs in five innings and left with the game tied at 3-3.

Then Tom Goodwin cracked a broken-bat single to left, and Lincoln (0-3) walked Rich Aurilia on four pitches. Jeff Kent clubbed a first-pitch curveball down the left-field line for an RBI double, and up to the plate stepped Barry Bonds, who had already been intentionally walked twice.

With Santiago, a not-so-fleet catcher with a propensity to hit into double plays, on deck, the next move was obvious. Bonds took four balls for his record-setting 46th intentional walk, surpassing Willie McCovey's 1969 mark.

Santiago spoiled the strategy, crushing a 1-1 pitch into the left-center stands and putting the game away. It was the veteran's eighth career grand slam.

"We're trying to win a ballgame, and our best options were to walk Barry," said manager Lloyd McClendon. "The fact is, you can only go to the well so many times. They got veteran players. Walking Barry is certainly not a slight on the other players they have. We just felt the matchups were better against the other guys. Benito is a veteran guy, and got a pitch he could hit. He did what he's supposed to do.

"[Lincoln] just threw [awful] pitches. No sense in trying to analyze it -- the ball was up in the zone. They're Major League hitters; they're going to hit it hard. It's that simple. He got it down, he had four strikeouts."

Lincoln, who entered the game 0-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 33 games with the Pirates, didn't assess his own performance quite so harshly.

"I threw the ball pretty good," said Lincoln, who arrived less than an hour before the game. "I just made a bad pitch to Benito Santiago. I kind of hung a slider to him, and I paid for it. But I don't think the other things were too bad."

Lincoln was pressed into action early because for the fifth time in his past six starts, Benson lasted less than six innings. . . .

Glad you could swing by for a visit to Pace Communications HQ and have the opportunity to bunk down in the luxurious confines of the affordably priced "Pink Palace." Tim: Special thanks for that primo cigar I enjoyed so much as we lounged poolside last night with assorted Sky magazine staffers. A fun evening all around.
Enjoy the rest of your trip -- what incredible memories you'll have to cherish. Please give my regards to my native metro D.C. area as you wend your way north. While you're there, here's a suggestion for a very cool (and free) diversion that you probably won't find in many guidebooks: Get up close and personal with big jets either taking off or landing (depending on which way air-traffic control has them going) at Reagan National Airport with a visit to the little park at Gravelly Point, just north of the airport off of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (heading out of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, which you also shouldn't miss). It's a sight and sound you won't soon forget. Also worth a visit (and yes, also free): Teddy Roosevelt Island, in the middle of the Potomac, accessible from northbound G.W. Parkway between the Roosevelt and Key bridges. Take the footbridge across the river and discover a true urban oasis in the shadows of the Kennedy Center.
But before you leave the Outer Banks, budget the time to climb the Jockey's Ridge sand dune. You won't regret it!
Safe, happy travels....

David,
Welcome back yourself. Nancy's photos of the house in the Berkshires look great. She says the house is even better, inside and out, than it looks in the pictures.
We're still hoping Leslie and Emma will make it down here.

Yeah, we're home. Pulled in around 7:00. Should have just kept driving south to exit 63 and a day at the beach tomorrow. Too much to do before we leave on Thursday including a quick trip to my home away from home in Houston. Leslie said she's too relaxed after 7 weeks in the Berkshires to go to the beach. I guess she needs some stress in her life before our vacation, so she won't be seeing you this week even after 'hearing' the beach in your message earlier today. We'll return Sunday morning the 1st and plan to go to Graydon on Monday. Despite Leslie's threat not to get on the plane if i take my computer I'm taking it with me so we'll be in touch.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Welcome home fun-seekers! (Relieved you didn't get busted for fireworks!!) Just read through the last part of your journal...glad you spent some time in southern Utah (one of my favorite places on the planet)...fun to get your Elvis postcard...hope that by now Jonny has forgotten the steel wool story...did I ever tell you that in one of my previous lives (it feels that way now)I traveled around the country and washed windows for gas money? Had business cards and everything..."your pane is our pleasure"...I can still remember the difficulty of re-entry (not pretty!) Can still feel the pull of the open road...but, when you really look at it...there's no place like home. So, welcome home, you two. di & mike

Dianne,
Thanks for the note. Not only do I remember your window-washing career, but I have adopted and adapted one of your hard-learned and hard-earned strategies from that era: You would be much more likely to get the window-washing job if you went into the store or office with all your gear and equipment -- buckets, sponges, squeegees, whatever. When potential employers saw you were ready to go to work RIGHT NOW they were much more likely to hire you. I've used that to my advantage a number of times. So a belated thank you.
And yes, re-entry has its ups and downs. I am busy on my "honey do" list, and spent the first full day back at the hardware store, buying a replacement toilet seat and other forms of suburban torture.
On the other hand, Jonny points out that is is great to be able to open the fridge any time we want and see what's inside, and even eat some of it without asking.
Cheers,
Tim
