The Healing Power of Music in Therapy

Paul J. Hannig, Ph.D. - PsychotherapyHELP

I have been using music in therapy since 1968 and I can tell you the results have been fabulous.

Music makes you happy. That's about as simple as it gets. Music and other performing arts, including dance and theater, takes you to a place removed from the mundane drama of your life. With music in therapy, you can laugh, cry, reminisce and choose whatever emotion you need in order to bring up complete and total resolution, clearing and connection that you need to transform your life.

Music: the Gift that Keep Giving

Music and the performing arts are enormous gifts from the universe from which can blossom extraordinary passions and the fulfillment of your dreams. It's a way to drop off your mortal sins and mitigate the weariness of ordinary existence. From this starting point you can stake claims to immortality. You can harness the sunset, the universe, evolution and the infinite glory of the sublime and transcendent. You can soar, fly through eternity, transcend time and space and dive fully into the fullness of life each and every minute, every day. The rose that is in your heart begins to bloom and there is a glistening on the green of your spirit. Music and the performing arts is all this and so much more, if you know how to use it. Unfortunately, some creative people have used it in a way that only led to disaster and their eventual demise. But music, within a therapeutic context and mindframe, can transform your very existence and take you to new and unbelievable realities. There is a genre of music that comes out of what I call "Psych Musicology." It has the power to teach, move, reorder, restructure genes, neurotransmitters, spirit and the very nature of relationships to self and others.

Music: a Powerful Communication that Heals

Music is a universal language that influences all levels of human existence and behavior. It functions as a communication medium and provides a powerful, pleasant and healing experience. I can remember facilitating altered states of consciousness with strobe lights and music and discovering specific frequencies that entered into the mind and spirit which opened up deep primordial alternative universes that moved my life and the lives of so many others. That's a scientific fact. Are you rediscovering the healing power of music?

Music in Therapy: A Liberting Force

Music therapy, coaching, mentoring and counseling have been used in specialized senses in treating persons with special needs. It is used in Orthodox medicine settings. But, there is a much greater and wider use of music that I have been using and researching that is applicable to everyone, inside and outside of special needs. With music evocation methods, the clearing out, crying and screaming of long buried repressed memories and feelings releases cortisol, the stress hormone, and restructures neurotransmitters in the brain and changes consciousness, while eradicating defensive repression. Thus, music is a liberating force from the slavery of blocked emotional pain. We are now discovering that certain music stimulates the pituitary gland, which affects the nervous system and helps the flow of blood. Using music, you vibrate the cells of the body and your consciousness can be changed to promote good health. If you use the right kind of music, you relax and refresh and even purify your brain and your thought processes. During work, music improves efficiency.

The Therapeutic Benefits of Music in Therapy

Therapeutic listening to music can control the negative aspects of your personality, eliminating worry, anger, stress, cognitive biases while leaving curing headaches, abdominal pain and tension. You can even use music to control your emotions, blood pressure, while restoring the functioning of your liver. That can be of help to to those of you who are willing to acknowledge addictions and alcoholism.

The right music therapy evocation methods prove to be a valid and efficacious treatment for those who have affective, psychosocial, communicative and cognitive needs. Like I stated, if done in the right context and frame of mind, music and even comedy can be the most powerful life changing and therapeutic tool you will ever need. If you have the passion for deeper self understanding, using very specific music can open up a new wisdom fountain that will shower you with superior intelligence beyond the ordinary measurable intelligence methods.

Music and comedy and other forms of the performing arts can improve happiness, health, peace, tranquility, transcendence, transformation and concentration. However, it is important to know the exact method, context, tools and music for this therapeutic approach to be powerfully effective. Every time a client sees me for deep feeling work, a specific kind of music used at the right specific moment, unleashes the deep feeling experience that leads to profound change and even cure.

Try this Experiment on Your Own

Choose your music. What is your goal? Do you want to relax and clear your mind and refresh your body? Do you want to seek out cosmic answers from the divine aspects of the universe? Do you want to overcome and bypass repressive blockages in defenses and bring up old stored emotions for clearing, connection and resolution? What ever reason or purpose that you want to use music for therapeutic growth and transformation, there is the right and appropriate tool and method.

Try chanting a favorite mantra, a phrase, and unsaid word, a vowel sound: ahhhh.....ohhhh....aaum....ohm.....sing a melody......dance..... You get the picture.
