Volunteer Ministry
L.I.N.K.
Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen LINK serves hot meals to as many as 150 persons in need, three days a week at First Christian Church. LINK meals are provided and served by volunteers from many Lawrence churches. Plymouth's day is the third Thursday of each month. Volunteers provide casseroles, vegetables, salads, desserts, milk and help with serving and cleanup. Call Rev. Josh Longbottom, 843-3220, to volunteer or for more information.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is one of the largest homebuilders in the United States. Funds are raised through private donations of cash and building materials along with the monthly interest-free mortgages paid by the owners. Families must qualify for these homes and contribute "sweat equity" on their own or other Habitat houses. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing simple, decent housing around the world. Plymouth Church has been a covenant church in the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity chapter since 1990. In 1998, Plymouth raised over five thousand dollars in cash and materials for a Habitat house built by the covenant churches. Plymouth sponsored and built a home in the fall of 2001. We will be working on a new house this Fall with several area churches. To get involved, call Doug Beene at 842-4669.
Donations and Financial Support
CROP Walk
CROP Walk is an annual event provided to raise funds for Church World Service. CWS works to end hunger, assist in disaster situations, and help meet the needs of refugees. Last year some three million people walked for CROP nationwide. Interested walkers should contact Josh Longbottom. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised from that walk remains in Lawrence to support L.I.N.K. and the Saturday Lunch Group.
Emergency Service Council
Emergency Service Council provides one-time assistance for individuals and families who are residents of Lawrence and are facing a crisis. ESC is a coalition representing many social service agencies, churches, community, and civic groups. They have no paid staff. All contributions of cash go directly to ESC's efforts to facilitate emergency financial assistance for shelter and utilities, to support its food collection program, and to coordinate other requests. Plymouth Church supports ESC financially; in addition, food collections are taken on the first Sunday of each month.
Relay for Life
The congregation organizes teams to participate in this overnight walkathon each June. The Relay for Life is the annual fund-raising event of the American Cancer Society.
The Mitten Tree
The Hazlett family, in memory of Melinda Hazlett Dunlap, donates the Mitten Tree each year. The tree stands in the Mayflower Room during Advent season, collecting mittens, gloves, hats, socks, and scarves. These items are sent on to Penn House, a clearinghouse for families in need in Lawrence.
Women's Transitional Care
Women's Transitional Care Service provides services to battered women and their children. Made up primarily of volunteers, WTCS provides a shelter house (a residence where women receive support and assistance), a 24-hour crisis line, and a peer support and advocacy group. Plymouth provides WTCS with financial support and yearly collection of items needed for the shelter house. Call WTCS directly at 841-6887. WTCS is in need of women's advocates (they will train) and a variety of other volunteers, as well as contributions of household goods and linens.
Head Start Angels
Each Christmas, Angel ornaments are available with gift ideas for the children in the Head Start Preschool. Each child receives an article of clothing and a toy from members of the congregation.
ECM
Ecumenical Christian Ministries ECM represents Plymouth and other churches on the KU campus. It provides an open and affirming place for students to explore their faith and consider their relationship to the earth and its inhabitants. Programs such as Veggie Lunch and University Forum bring the KU and Lawrence community together. As a major contributor to ECM, Plymouth also fills 3 spots on the Board of Directors. If you are interested in helping with programming or serving on the board, contact Rev. Thad Holcombe, campus minister, at 843-4933 or check out the website at www.ecmku.org
Children's Sunday School Offerings
Each year, the offerings collected during Sunday School are donated to a service project of their choice. In the past, the gift has gone to L.I.N.K., Habitat for Humanity, the Heifer Project and to local homeless shelters.

Board of Mission and Service
The Board of Mission and Service coordinates many of the local, national, and international mission activities of Plymouth Church. Its members act as liaisons with the many organizations Plymouth supports, helping to provide opportunities for financial support and hands-on mission work as well as coordinating many of the church's regular and special offerings.

Get involved with church organization, finance, and the planning of other church activities. Contact Kay Koch or the church office for more information, 843-3220.
Host Ministry
Our church building provides a home for numerous local organizations. Particularly as a downtown church, this ministry is an important part of who we are as a congregation. The groups for which we currently provide space are:
Community Children's Center/Head Start
This program combines federally funded half-day child development programs with a state-assisted low income daycare center. The program serves approximately 78 children. Head Start contributes to our physical plant by paying for its utilities and making repairs and improvements. An open house at Head Start this fall will give Plymouth members the opportunity to see and hear about the program, and to find out about volunteer needs.
Other groups
Other Groups Groups that meet at Plymouth occasionally are: Kaw Valley Quilters Guild, Narcotics Anonymous, KU International Students, Mother to Mother Ministry, Bert Nash Center (training sessions), Project Linus, Oread Neighborhood Association, Lawrence Preservation Alliance, Douglas County Alliance for the Mentally Ill, KU World Religion Seminars and Douglas County AIDS Project (DCAP). To get involved please call the organization directly.
