LABRADORITE STONE EGG AND STAND
A very highly polished handmade Labradorite egg with stand from Madagascar. 2.0" x 1.5"
Labradorite (a variety of plagioclase feldspar) is a fairly abundant grayish mineral that has brilliant flashes of color (usually green, blue or red) after it is polished (called labradorescence). The crystals are transparent to translucent. There is a darker variety of labradorite (called "black moonstone") which has bluish inclusions. Labradorite is usually cut with a flat surface in order to highlight the flashes of color.
Labradorite was originally found along the coast of Labrador about 1805. The natives of Labrador attributed mystical qualities to the stone due its play of colors or "labradoresence". They called it "firestone" and used a powder produced from grinding it up as a magical potion to cure their diseases.

FOSSIL CELL MARBLE STONE EGG AND STAND
A very highly polished Fossil Cell Marble stone egg and stand from Pakistan. Cut and polished from fossil cell stone.
Although the name of the stone is fossil cell stone they are not fossilized cells. They are shaped like cells and many have whatappears to be a nucleus but, they are not cells.
Living cells do not get big enough to see. Some of these "cells" are almost 2" long. The "cells" are sedimentary in origin but notfossils.
They "cells" form under the ocean in shallow water as on the continental shelf. Hardened or semi-hardened mud is sturred upby a big storm. The layers of material gets broken up and moved a short distance and rounded off while being moved. Oxygenin the water causes a layer of rust to form on the pieces before they are covered up again and form rock. The age of the rock isprobably Cambrian (500 to 570 million years old) because occasionally some small trilobite fragments may be found in the"cells". 3.0" x 2.0"

CRINOID STONE EGG AND STAND
A stone egg and stand containing Crinoid Fossils from Morocco. The finish is not the high-gloss look usually seen on marble, but has a more natural look to it.
The term crinoid refers to an extant (living) class of echinoderms. These animals, commonly known as "sea lilies" and "feather stars", have a long history. They first appear in the fossil record in marine sediments deposited approximately 530 million years ago during the Cambrian Period. Stemmedforms are called sea lilies because of their superficial resemblance to flowers. These stemmed crinoids became abundant in the middle Ordovician Period, 470 million years ago, and flourished in the shallow inland seas of the Paleozoic Era. Though so abundant that many late Paleozoic Iimestone deposits are composed primarily of crinoid skeletal parts, they nearly became extinct 240 million years ago at the end of the Paleozoic Era. Free-moving stemless varieties, called feather stars, appeared during the Mesozoic Era approximately 200 million years ago.
