LARGE SIZED TECTITE FROM THAILAND
Nice Tectite from Thailand. Over 1.5" long and in nice condition.

Tektites are unusual glassy, often pitted, rocks that are a source of controversy for many geologists. One theory of their formation suggests that an asteroid impact fused bits of the earth into glass, which fell back through the earth's atmosphere as "showers". Another newer theory holds that, based on their similar chemical composition to certain lunar granites, volcanoes erupting on the moon ejected chunks of magma into space, quenching it into a glass almost instantaneously due to the extreme cold of space. This theory would explain the SEVERE internal stress in tektites produced by extremely rapid cooling, much more than would be seen at normal Earth temperatures. If aligned properly with the Earth, the volcano might eject it out of the moon's gravity and the tektites would travel to Earth as "showers' of moon rocks. Either way, they are really unusual and a great conversation piece!
