Artist Jaime Izquierdo     I am in the process of developing a series of works related to Darfur refugee camps, and refugee women and children in camps around the world. The first finished oil painting is 60" by 72".  The theme is a group of Darfur women attacked by Arab militiamen.  I was inspired by a photo that appeared in the New York Times Sunday edition of May 14, 2007.  The photographer, Michael Kamber, is an award-winning photojournalist on assignment in Darfur . I contacted Mr. Kamber via email, and obtained his written permission to use his images as basis for my current theme.    I am searching for funds to develop 12-15 works for an art exhibit in support of  Darfur Women. As you know, refugee women do not have any rights, or protection in the Darfur camps. I have two daughters 23 and 28,  and women's issues have been very important to me.  I had been searching for a political theme that would be meaningful to me, and at the same time would lend itself as  inspiration for related works. The Darfur Women Project will take one year to complete and it will be supported by your contributions. As I receive contributions, I will continue developing works, publicizing the development through my Website, blog, Facebook and Tweeter. Darfur, Oil on canvas 60" x 72". I was inspired by the work of Mr. Michael Kamber, an award winning photographer on assignment in Darfur. His photograph appeared in the New York Times in May 14, 2007. The colorful image of the family represented in the photograph betrayed the barbarity behind the apparently beautiful scene. I requested permission from Mr. Kamber to use his photograph as the basis for my painting, and he graciously agreed. I would like to thank him for his readiness to contribute to this work. It is my hope that this painting and the following works help raise awareness about the women of Darfur, hoping that a solution to this conflict happens in the very near future.The project is a group of 12-15 paintings for an exhibit supporting the Darfur Women situation.
