"9x14 Blues"

NCP137 NO COVER SAMPLER #9

-
This disc chronicles another 14 releases from the Detroit blues label No Cover Productions. This is the ninth sampler in the series each one containing 14 tracks from 14 different No Cover releases, all in cronological order. We start this one off with a couple live tracks from "Psychild" Robert Noll and his Blues Mission Band from the "Retrospect" series of live recordings featuring recordings by No Cover President Mike Boulan during live shows before the label existed in the early 1990's. First it's the "Devil Man Boogie" from Vol. 3 which was a staple of Robert's live shows at this time. Next we hear "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" from Vol. 4 which was also a Blues Mission favorite. Detroit's rockin' reptiles, The Alligators let us hear the opening cut from the CD "Down At Big Kadies" titled "Long Way Down". This is followed by "Your Man's In Jail" from Count Bracey & The Pleasuretones off the 2008 Blues Challenge sampler from the 2008 finals in Detroit. John Latini gives us "Blues Makes Me Feel Good" from The Best Of Heatstock 2009, followed by, the legendary John Sinclair with The Planet D Nonet from the CD "Viper Madness" doing "Struttin' With Some Barbecue". The Billy Davis Rhythm Machine returns with the title track from the CD "Backballed" Billy's 6th release with us! Which is followed by "Bam!" from Crossroads Blues Band off the Blues Challenge 2009 Finals. Roni Collins does a great cover of "If Trouble Was Money" written by his uncle Mr. Bo Collins from the Detroit Blues Society's "Headstone Fundraiser CD" Laith Al Saadi gives us "No One Left To Blame" from "The Best Of Heatstock 2010". The Boa Consrtictors check in next with "Hurricane" from the CD "The Boa Constrictors - Live At Callahan's Music Hall" then it's another trip back to "The Best Of Heatstock" series for a track from the 2011 show called "Gettin' In" by The Flying Crowbars. The Mike Espy Group gives us "P & G Shffle" from "Blues Vol. 2" and finally from the CD "Always Blue" the M. Espy Trio leaves us with "Greenie's Blues" to close this sampler out with style. That's all for now - but don't worry - we are hard at work on the next 14 releases which will be featured on 10x14 when it comes!

8x14 Blues

NCP122 NO COVER SAMPLER #8

-
This disc chronicles another 14 releases from the Detroit blues label No Cover Productions. this is the eigth sampler in the series each one containing 14 tracks. with one song off each Cd No Cover has released, these samplers are a great way to get to know the many artists who have recorded for this prolific label. 8x14 = 112 songs if you have the whole set!
We start this one off with a song by Chris Canas a young singer- guitarist who is keeping the blues alive, while mixing in newer styles to come up with a unique sound. Then Dale Robertson adds a touch of "Witchcraft" to the mix with the title track from his first No Cover release. Spencer Bell, who passed at the young age of 27 left us a great musical legacy. Featured here is Spencer's song "Tourist" from the CD Feudal Brutal and the American Dream. Next CeeCee Collins tells us "Don't Mess Around" from her CD with RJ's Rhythm Rockers. "That's All" is the final cut from John Sinclair's second No Cover release titled Detroit Life" which is Followed by a track from The Christy Howard Band. Then Broken Arrow gives us "Leavin'" a blues-rock ballad. Al Lukas came down from Toronto to be No Cover's first Canadian act. Al is a great writer and this track "Mainstream Blues" is a great example of that. Front Street Blues Band is next with - 15 original songs on their CD it is equal to a double album! The 4:20 show has been going on for 5 years now and we have recorded them all. This cut is from the 3rd year. Finally we close out another great sampler with a cut from The Billy Davis Rhythm Machine written by Billy who really is "Mr. Rock N Roll"! that's all for now but don't worry we are hard at work on the next 14 releases that will be on 9x14 when it comes!

Don't Mess Around

NCP111 CEECEE COLLINS & THE RJ SPANGLER TRIO

-
CeeCee Collins & the RJ Spangler Trio have recorded, mixed, mastered, and released their new 7 song CD in just over 2 weeks! "Don't Mess Around" (NCP111) contains three great covers by true Detroit blues legends Mr. Bo, Willy D. Warren and Eddie "Guitar" Burns with the remaining tracks coming from the pen of CeeCee herself! "Don't Mess Around" is a soulful package of real urban Detroit style blues. The RJ Spangler Trio features the strong guitar work of Paul Carey (Alberta Adams, Thornetta Davis, Sir Mack Rice, etc.) and the soulful Hammond organ of Phil Hale (also w/ Thornetta Davis as well as the Milton Show and his own Philharmonic Trio) as well as the leader, on drums. Over the years RJ has behind the careers of such artists as Alberta Adams, Johnnie Bassett, Joe Weaver, the Motor City R&B Pioneers, Odessa Harris and many others, taking them all over the world to perform.
The real story though is CeeCee Collins, an under-rated Detroit gem! CeeCee has worked in Europe with the New Supreme's and around Detroit the Detroit Underground, the Witch Doctors and Soul Purpose. She is an incredible blues & soul singer who sings with conviction and great emotion and has become known for her ability to really connect with an audience.

6 X 14

NCP095 NO COVER SAMPLER #6

-
This disc chronicles another 14 releases from the Detroit blues label No Cover Productions. We start off with a major milestone for No Cover with the reissue of two CD's from Robert Noll This is followed by a local street musician whose blues are right from the dawn of blues time. That would be Travelin' Steve and his group Travelin' Blues, which in addition to Steve, features Gutbucket Bass and Harmonica. Next are two CD's from the Kenny Miller band, one live, and one studio. This is followed by a second Blues Challenge Sampler, again released in cooperation with the Detroit Blues Society, this time featuring the Challenge finals from 2005 Then we released the first volume of Robert Noll's "Live Retrospect" Series and "Lonesome" Dave Paul follows with his second No Cover CD titled "Live At The Attic". Cooley Pope had a band called Idlewild Blue, which backs him on most of the tracks on his Cd "Detroit Attitude" The next project is from R&B legend Charles "Buddy" Smith. It is titled "Resurrection". We hope that is exactly what it is for Buddy. Billy Davis has wanted to do a Christmas CD for as long as he can remember. Now he has one called "Merry Christmas To The World" and he couldn't be happier. The Sax Maniacs have gone through some personel changes through the years which have only made the band grow stronger. Their new CD "Will The Last One Out Of Detroit, Please Turn Out The Lights" is a strong set of all-original songs. Robbie Lee Noll is a great Acoustic Player, and his CD "Dear Friend" shows that rarely seen side, cut live at "Lenny's Coffe Gallery, with some studio cuts from Straight Ahead Studios, this one is a treat! The final cut on this disc is from Billy Davis' 4th No Cover CD, not yet released at the time of this writing.

Deep In Blues Country

NCP094 CHRISTY AND JEFF HOWARD

-
Jeff and Christy Howard are a husband-wife, singer-songwriter team, who are well known to the Detroit blues community. This CD "Deep In Blues Country" (NCP094) is their first acoustic release. They are also featured on the "Blues For Katrina" CD (NCP070) doing the song "I've Got A Weakness". They were finalists in 2005, and won the 2006 - Motor City Blues Challenge (acoustic solo/duo division). They represented Detroit in the 2007 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Jeff was formerly lead guitarist for the late Butler Twins, legends of Detroit blues, who had two hit blues albums in England during the mid-1990s and won two Detroit Music Awards in 2000. Christy's vocal style is soulful but mellow, smoky and sultry, yet melodic and soothing. Her country roots, deep in Tennessee, come out when she sings giving her a distinctive sound and a down-to-earth persona. Together, Christy and Jeff's music is a unique blend of Country, Rock, and Blues. Live they also perform chicago-style and delta blues, featuring some of the original blues compositions that are found on this CD. (13 original tracks)

Blues For Katrina & the McDowell Family

NCP071 VARIOUS ARTISTS/BENEFIT CD

-
When Katrina hit, it immediately became obvious that the Louisiana Gulf Coast would be in need of massive amounts of aid and assistance, not just for a few weeks, but for months and years.
Mike Boulan of No Cover Productions decided to help. Mike started by organizing this CD "Blues for Katrina & The McDowell Family"(NCP071) to assist local bluesman Odell's family. Odell Blues Boy "D" has 3 sisters who were living in the New Orleans area at the time Katrina hit - two families were in the lower 9th ward.
The call went out for musicians to come into the studio and over 20 bands and solo performers responded, donating their time and effort to the cause. They recorded 28 songs, mostly originals, for the benefit CD. (Which ended up becoming a 2 CD project) The songs aren't all about the devastation caused by Katrina, although a few are, but the energy and spirit of the performers is readily evident. There was a special energy in the studio over the course of the sessions.
The artists on this CD are:
1. Little Jr. Cannaday: "What Did I Do So Bad" 2. Big Shorty: "Gas Station Chicken" 3. Leonardo: "Love In Vain" 4. Erich Goebel: "City Blues" 5. "Lonesome" Dave Paul: "Mojo Hand" 6. Mary Thompson & The Delta Children: "Jelly Roll" 11. Bobby Murray: "Sunny Side Of Heaven" 12. The Billy Davis Rhythm Machine: "Katrina" 13. Travelin' Blues: "Nightly Things" 14. Louisiana Heat: "Think"
There is a companion CD, "Blues for Katrina" (NCP070) which is also available now.
