Jason Smith leaves the last hour of each work day at St. Peter’s Medical Group available for those who need to see him without benefit of an appointment.
He also leaves open a portion of his life as a physician to help others for whom specialized medical care is at best distant and beyond their financial grasp.
Smith, 33, specializes in podiatry -- care of the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg.
“Something always drew me toward medicine,” he said.
His initial interest was in becoming an anesthesiologist. The financial aspect was appealing but not reason enough to choose it for a career.
Being involved with people was also important to him, he explained.
