Billard Commemorative Park Turns Two
In the blink of an eye, time passes, and our Billard Commemorative Park, 11642 Brady Road, turned two in November. Developed, owned and maintained by the Mandarin Community Club, the Park was dedicated in November of 2007. Since then, it has added a welcome picturesque, quiet spot to our community.
The original farmhouse homestead on the property, considered of historic interest in Jacksonville, was built in the late 1890s and occupied by Mandarin resident Frederick Billard. The park now on the site was designed to recognize the history of the home, honor local citizens, provide a memorial tribute to veterans, offer a botanical butterfly garden and add a green spot in our community.
The Park centerpiece is a large gazebo surrounded by landscape and walkways. A custom designed memorial honoring those who have served in the five branches of our military is another focal point. The majority of the work done at the Park was by MCC and community volunteers.
The life of the Billard Park is an on-going thing. Area residents can help future development and maintenance of this lovely area by participating in the BUY A BRICK Program. Honor loved ones, commemorate an event, or simply show your support by purchasing an engraved brick that will become a permanent part of the park walkways. A choice of size, inscription and location are offered. For further information, please contact the Club office at 268-1622.

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Mandarin Community Club conducted a wreath-laying ceremony November 11, 2009 at the Veteran's Monument at the Billard Commemorative Park. Placement of the wreath was made by Leo Kreisel, LCDR US Navy (ret) and assisted by Betty Stafford from the MCC Board of Directors. Opening remarks and the dedication were made by Susie Scott, current President of the Mandarin Community Club. See photo in the Club Picture Gallery.
