Cosmic Dancer
Nataraj
Cosmic Dancer - oil on canvas 18"X24"
This painting was used as the official logo for First Night Boston 2007, a citywide New Year's Eve celebration.

The dance of creation is symbolized by a bronze icon from the 12th Century called the Nataraj. The elements that make up the perceived world; space, air, fire, water and earth are produced by the vibration, a dance. The ancient sages of India passed down mantras or sounds syllables in the Sanskrit language, repition of which aligns the organism synchronistically with the elemental environment. The sound syllable Na represents the earth, Ma is water, Shi is fire, Va is air and Ya is space. These vibrations when repeated in this order also elegantly creates the meaning, "I honor Shiva." Shiva representing the divine principle of the unchanging and eternal aspect of the individual called the atman by the ancients.

The meaning of the mantra, the intention and the syllables themselves all combine to transform the individual to resonate more harmoniously with the universe, the environment in which the eternal becomes manifested as the ephemeral.

Modern quantum physics paints a very similar picture of the universe we live in, where particles of energy oscillate and atoms are constantly bumping into each other in this dance of creation. Sub atomic particles are simultaneously here and at the other side of the world and the most amazing aspect of this is that particle behavior changes according to the intention of the experimenters.

We perceive the resulting material world as solid and still, just as we perceive the hummingbird to be still while its wings are beating frantically to hold it aloft.

This bears out the message from the ancient and modern sages to become conscious of our intentions as this forms the root of our actions and ultimately the basis of our life experiences.

Lucilda has always questioned the nature of reality and her musings have been depicted as paintings and email journals. A student of nature, reality, and mysticism since childhood and throughout her adult life, she searches for meaning to the eternal questions, her primary concerns.

Creating art that is driven by the search for meaning, rather than the art historical imperative allows the artist to touch on universal and timeless images that nurtures the soul - the aspect of the individual that is eternal and unchanging. Viewing the art created in this mode can resonate with the inner witness of the unfolding universe.
