Lizard Under the Skillet

-
Last updated 16 Jul 2006
(was) July 9, 2006
Yes, July is USUALLY hot! But Mother Nature was in our corner this year, serving up temperatures in the high 60s-lower 70s, no wind, and a bit of light rain to go along with the jalapeno cream cheese, icecream, and taquitos that were all devoured on this year's Lizard Under the Skillet. The tour hosted 450 riders in all, with no mishaps other than a few low tires and a broken spoke. This year's detoured routes with a few extra miles due to bridge construction on didn't seem to make a difference - a good time was had by all, and not enough good could be said about the nice change in weather.
We would like to thank our sponsers: Cycleworks, Great Harvest, and Sunflower Outdoor for another great year of support, the Douglas County Sheriff's office for getting us across Hwy 56 safely, and the exceptional group of riders who worked with traffic to keep everyone flowing. Thank you!!
We hope you'll join us for Lizard Under the Skillet 2007!

Tour de Chicken Creek Gravel Road Ride

-
Last updated 01 October 2006
14-15 Oct 2006
It will happen! Join us.
Location: Lone Star Lake Campground
Events:Saturday Evening Lighted Ride, Saturday Night Camp-out, Sunday Tour de Chicken Creek Gravel Road Ride
Cost:$10.00 for the Sunday ride, maybe a fee to camp
Details:
- Lone Star Lake is about 15 miles southwest of Lawrence. Campground features include showers, restrooms, and a swimming area (br-r-r...maybe). Both rides start at the campground.
- You will need a bike light to participate in the the Saturday night ride.
- Sunday's Tour de Chicken Creek will start at 8:00 AM. The route will have 25 and 50 mile options, both featuring the historic Chicken Creek Bridge, a native stone arch bridge constructed in the late 1800's by local craftsman and laborers and is on the National Registry of historic places. Be sure to stop at the bridge and take a few minutes to appreciate this historic structure before continuing on your ride.
- In general, the roads are hard-packed, with three to four big rolling hills and virtually no motor traffic.
- SAG support will include two stops with snacks and water. Bring cash in case the route passes a convenience store.
- No restrooms will be available on the route---except for that provided by nature.
- Mountain bikes, hybirds, cross bikes, and recumbents with tires for hard-packed gravel are recommended: road bikes with 28-37 width tires will also work.
Come out and enjoy a different kind of ride and new scenery! See a part of Douglas County that most people don't get to enjoy.

Octoginta

-
Last updated 02 October 2006
(was) 30 September and 1 October 2006
To All Who Participated in this year's event:
The weather was (almost) ideal, the volunteers were courteous, and everyone did what they agreed to do with enthusiasm. Everything seemed to come together.
I saw a few things that we could do better, but that gives us the opportunity to make next year's edition even better.
Whether you got to ride, or you volunteered to help, please give us your suggestions for making next year's Octoginta even better. I am reasonably sure that we will change the route next year, so give us your suggestions as to where we should go. (E-mail suggestions to ask_lbc@yahoo.com)
Also, please thank our sponsors: Sunflower, Cycle Works, and the Great Harvest Bread Company for all the support that they continue to give to the Octoginta ride.
The Sunflower breakfast SAG is done at no charge to the club and I heard numerous comments from riders who rode specifically for the breakfast. When you are in the shop, be sure to thank Dan for his support.
There were numerous riders whose day would have been ruined if it had not been for the support of Gary and the Cycle Works staff. Whether it was a broken spoke, or a faulty chain, they got the cyclist back on the road.
And if you missed the yummy Great Harvest Bread at the lunch SAG, you were probably 20% more likely to need a SAG ride in. Please stop by the store and thank them for their continued support.
Craig Weinaug
Octoginta Tour Director
