Offered in over 280 centres in over 50 countries, the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, formerly the Cambridge-RSA CELTA, is regarded as one of the most valuable, practical English language teacher-training courses available. With some 10,000 teachers taking the course worldwide each year, it's easy to understand why it is often referred to as the "industry standard". In addition to the information below, you can also find out more on the CELTA, including a downloadable copy (.pdf) of the syllabus, from the Cambridge ESOL web site at:

With over 20 years' experience in RSA C-TEFLA, D-TEFLA and Cambridge CELTA courses, Language Resources, Kobe, is the only centre in Japan that currently offers this internationally recognised qualification. While most trainees are from the Himeji, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Otsu, Shiga and Wakayama areas, we regularly have teachers attend the course from places further afield such as Nagoya, Okayama, Shikoku etc.
Courses are held twice a year on a 'part-time' basis. Each course comprises 20 sessions (days) with each session being held from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays, plus 2 (or 3) Sundays. One course is held from April to July, and the other from October to February, (the latter having a 2 to 3-week break over the Christmas - New Year period). We do not offer 'intensive' courses.
Applications are now being accepted for the next course, which is tentatively scheduled to run from 3rd April to 25th July, 2010. If you would like our information package, which contains a fuller description of the course, an application form and other details, please click here: Request for CELTA Application Package ;

The CELTA course has proved to be both popular and extremely useful to teachers working in a wide variety of teaching environments from JETs and ALTs teaching in Junior High and High Schools to those working at private language schools, junior colleges, universities, in-house company training programmes etc. The CELTA is open both to native speakers of English and non-native speakers who are considered to have adequate English language skills to complete the course work and assignments. Trainees have come from well over 20 different countries including Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., the U.S.A. , and, recently, an increasing number of teachers from continental Europe. Whatever their background, personal and professional goals, trainees tend to have at least two things in common - a desire to offer their students a better teaching-learning environment and, as a result, a desire to improve their own job-satisfaction as teachers.
The CELTA is both a challenging and a professionally highly-rewarding experience but trainees should be prepared to devote several hours of study/research outside the training sessions each week. Candidates will have free access to LR's extensive CELTA reference library - arguably one of the best-stocked reference libraries for ELT professionals in Japan.
Applicants who are interested in reading more details about the CELTA can visit the Cambridge ESOL web site at http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/teaching-awards/celta.html (Note: Individual courses may vary in their actual implementation and sequencing to meet the needs of the participants, and other factors. Trainees will be given the actual syllabus on Day 1 of their course.)
Tuition fees are 295,000 yen (plus 5% consumption tax = 309,750 yen). Current members of the JET scheme are offered a 5% reduction in tuition fees. There is also a Cambridge Candidate's Fee of £94.19 (approx. 15,000 yen at time of writing). A scheme for payment by installments is available at a slightly higher cost. Details are given in the Info to Applicants package. We also do our best to accommodate teachers who may have special requests regarding payment schedules. Please feel free to ask.
The CELTA is not, and cannot, be offered on a distance-learning basis due to the high degree of actual classroom Teaching Practice (TP) with real learners - a key element that sets it apart from many other ELT teacher training courses.
Applicants from outside Japan are kindly advised that while we may be able to offer some basic advice, we are unable to provide any practical assistance with visa applications, accommodation or work if they wish to attend this course. It may be a good idea to check the Internet for accommodation in the Kansai area. Unless you have, or expect to have, a job lined up in Japan, or sufficient funds to cover both the course fees and living expenses, we would normally recommend taking the CELTA in your home country if it is available there. Also, we do not guarantee any offer of a job on completion of the course.
Do take a look at the CELTA FAQs page for answers to many of the typical questions applicants ask about the course. Click on Links to visit the Cambridge ESOL home page for more information on Cambridge courses.

' The course exceeded my expectations. The level of detail and depth provided in Input sessions and required in Planning and Assignments was far greater than I had expected.
