Past What's New for the month of September 2001
 |
September 30th 2001 What a weekend! Starting Friday evening, I did an adult birthday party for a 33 year
old corporate lawyer in DC, near Georgetown. There wasn't a lot of people like you'd expect. There were about 12
guests and all were very receptive to what I was doing. It was great, and everybody was amazed. I did a show and
then did a little close-up table magic. I was pleased with the show and adults are just big kids with it comes
to magic. Of course there are the few skeptics that think they can see and know everything. But, I think I got
them to see things a bit differently. I stayed a bit longer and chatted with everyone. Finally, about midnight
I drove home. I then prepared the certificates for Saturday until 4 am.
On Saturday I did two shows and today (Sunday)I did two. Both shows went well, but at one show a very special little
girl did a very extraordinary thing that few kids at the age of nine wouldn't even think of. This show was in Arlington,
VA. Not to far from the Pentagon incident. I have to tell you, this little nine year old touched my heart. Most
kids look forward to their birthday party, with cake, ice-cream, goody-bags, presents, games & all their closest
friends invited. Her name is Samantha (the birthday child I was performing for), and was really affected
by what happened on September 11, 2001. In a totally unselfish way, she told all of her friends that were invited
to not bring her any gifts for her. But instead, they were to bring donations of a dollar (I'm sure they
brought more) for the relief fund and aid to help in the crisis that this nation suffered only two weeks ago. I
thought that to be one of the most thoughtless acts that any child could possibly do. And as I watched her play
with her friends I saw a carefree smile and a happiness that was worth more than words could say! Her friends being
there was the best gift she had. Yes, she was wearing a Jack Julius Tee-shirt also!
Later that Saturday evening, I did another show for a family that was well receptive to what I performed. They
fed me, were very hospitable and really enjoyed the show. I think there were more adults there then kids. But I
do feel have to mention something with out pointing and fingers. When booking a show, please try not to
ask me to do a show for less then what it costs or to switch it with another. I have those prices and size of shows
set for a reason. As much as I would love to, I can't do a larger show for the small show price. It's not cost
effective for me. When I got to the house and saw a Mercedes and Lexus parked in the garage, I was thinking, they
could afford this. Yes, I know and I have done many shows where people want a show only because it was cheap, not
because of the quality of it. Budget? Well, some families are on a tight budget and I can tell and the first thing
they ask is,"How much do you charge." Without asking me about what I do. Yes, I am flexible in many situations
because I want them to have quality entertainment-ME! Jack Julius! Well, I did the small show with a big show bang
and I sure if they never knew there was a big show it wouldn't have made any difference. Because it's a smaller
show, that doesn't mean it would be of less quality. It just doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the med.
and larger shows have. I get that all the time where people would say, "There are gonna be lots of people
there, I'm sure you'll get many bookings ... can you do it for $225 instead of $275?" or "Can you do
it for free, I'll make sure your name is in the paper, and I'm sure you'll get calls..." THAT doesn't
pay my bills, or for the props and materials I use and the cost of gas and my time to drive, set up and take down,
then drive back home. Trust me, this will be in the FAQ section also, and in more
detail. Sunday, today, I did two shows, the first for Giant Food Corporation and the second for a little
seven year old named Katie who had seen me perform before at an event and told her mom she had to have me at her.
Her actual birthday was a month ago, but because of un-timed events the mom insisted on what ever day works
best and when I was free. There were about 15 kids and I had a blast, honestly I can say that was one of the best
little parties shows I have ever perform at. Need I say how the show went? Nah! But it was Great! I hung out with
the family at their Community Ctr., chatted a bit, was fed some goodies and a really tasty piece of the birthday
cake. Then drove thru DC to go home. The sun was setting and the Washington Monument
looked really cool with orange light from the setting sun hitting it. So, I parked my truck and took a snap with
my digital. Click here to see it!
Halloween is right around the corner, so start booking for your
party!

September 25th 2001 Hello! Just got back from doing my show at Merritt Athletic Club in Annapolis. The Show went well, but there
weren't as many people as I'd hope there'd be. Twenty or so kids, a few adults, and some staff members lingering
around. I guess people thought "Kiddy Show" when they heard "Magic Show" and didn't think they'd
enjoy it. Well, at least the ending with the Metamorphosis
went well and surprised the heck out of them. I had the head manager and a few staff member hold the pad locks
to lock me in the trunk. I knew they were thrilled because it went through the gym like wild fire when we were
done. I had Laura, a Merritt employee help with the Metamorphosis. We performed it improvised with a list of instructions I gave her. It shocked
everyone. No, I can't go into the what, who, how, why and when of the effect with her. But it worked, and I had
never performed it that way before. The only thing that was really weird was performing in a Racquet Ball Court.
It echoes like crazy. Well, anyway I am beat and ready to crash and my knee is screaming. I'll see ya soon! This
month is going by too fast... |

September 24th 2001 Good Morning! I'm not awake yet. But, I have to get up and do many things today. Go
to the gym and bust my butt working out. I've been lazy because of my knee. The go to GNC to get supplements and
Supplies for my Body For Life Challenge
... again. Look, how many of you out there can honestly say you are in the best shape of your life and would like
to stay the way you are? Few! Just think, in only 12 weeks (no fad diets or miracle pills). Just a pure and simple
blueprint for practicing and sculpting the best body of your life-for anyone! No sales pitch! I'm not making anything!
It's just something I have done and believe me it works. I have many friends at the karate school I go to-ECMA, especially the owner who lost 37 pounds. Wow! I was totally surprised when he said, "I
never had seen my abs before..." and they were ripped! Plus other friends & family member etc. got
into it. What can you lose? Weight! If anything you gain a better Body, Mind, Spirit and Life and new YOU! One
people will notice with a very positive attitude. There is also a book call, Body For Life which has been on the NY Times best seller list for
two years now and still going strong. Barns & Noble has it at 40% of since it is in the Best Seller List. Check
it out.
Sooooooooo, what's the big deal? I was asked one time why I had that on my site about getting into shape and would
prospective customers really be interested to know how I got into shape? Well, you know what? They are interested
and many people either E-mail me or ask me about it. As a performer, YES, being in shapes makes a very big difference.
It enhances my shows. I have better endurance for performing several shows a day. Being in shape helps keep me
mentally, physically and emotionally fit. My energy level is always up and when I perform people notice that. I
get a more positive feedback because of it. I do know that if you are unhappy with yourself in any way, it will
show and people will read that one way or another, through your actions, emotions, or physique. Most people take
for granted that they will always look the same, until they start getting weaker or out of shape. They they look
for the quick fixes. Sorry to inform you, but there are none! The Body For Life Challenge helps you to get all that into proper prospective. Try it! You
will find that your life, not just your Body will be affected by being in shape and you will have a much more positive
attitude towards everything! Not only that, you a chance to win your share of 1 Million Dollars all for free. Not
only that did you know that all proceeds from the Body For Life Book go to Make a Wish Foundation? They sure do!
So you'd be supporting a great cause and getting into the best shape of your life. TODAY

September 23rd 2001 I'm so tired. It's 12:30 AM...and when I got home I just brought up a few things and
just crashed. I mean I fell right out and crashed. I did three show today. They all went well and I was very pleased.
My really-wonderful and beautiful and really- special super close and did I mention really great friend
from Canada, Marilou-is on the line and said I should say I'm chatting with her at the same time as I'm writing
this. She'll probably never read this. Anyway....okay, now it's just me! The last show of the day were for two
boys, Mark & Nicky and one of them (Mark) was in my summer Magic Camp at ECMA School. The show was great! I did a few "extra" things, since is was the last
show of the day. I was suppose to be done and home by about 5:30 ish. But, I didn't get home until about 9:00PM.
Why? Well, They spoiled me, fed me really good pasta (my weakness) and other yummy things. So, I ended up chatting
with the family and friends there for a bit, cooling down while performing some close-up for a few minutes and
then finally left. It was really nice to hear one of the kids say, "I think you are the greatest and my
favorite magic performer in the world." That could make anyone's heart melt. It's nice when I do feel
appreciated for all my effort and time that I put into what I do. Even if is is a from a 7 year old. Well, that
is whole other subject I could write about. But, before the sun starts coming up and I end up performing my show
backwards from lack of sleep, I'd better hit the sack. Ohhh! The new Gray Kitty just jumped in my lap..."Meow!"
See you soon! Have a Magical Day! |
 |
September 18th 2001 Hey! How are you? Well, I have been in a slump with my knee, but still performing my
heart out. I just got back from a show I did a little earlier. It was fun and nice to be on a stage. I love the
stage. I really feel at home there. A recap? Hmmm! Well, this past weekend I did a few shows. They went well as
can be expected. Because of last weeks tragedy, I'm going to design a shirt and have proceeds go the either Red
Cross or some other organization to help out in some way. I still can't believe my eyes when I see that tape of
the Twin Towers being attacked. It flashes in my mind every once in a while and I feel an emptiness inside my heart.
That was the cruelest thing someone has ever done. Okay, I'm sorry, I needed to get that off my chest. My new "Gray"
kitty is growing and purrs up a storm when you pick her up or pet her. I stopped by Barry's Magic Shop
today to pick up supplies and got a few new effects which I can't wait to perform. Yeah, Baby! I'm
Still working on Chevys and hope to be performing there again very soon! I'm really tired...Good
Night! |

September 12th 2001 Just got back a little while ago. I did two shows today in the morning for Kids Club.
Not too many people where there like last year. I think yesterday had something to do with it. My assistant Cindy,
didn't show up. That upset me quite a bit. It's really hard to find reliable people these days. Jenn has always
and still is there when I need her. Is there anyone out there that loves to perform, dance or act and in great
shape? Call me! The first show was a little rough, but the second one went smoothly.
September 11th 2001 I spent all day watching TV and trying to absorb what happened. I couldn't believe it.
I felt very sad for those people and family that went through all that. I have many friends in NY and DC and have
not been able to reach them yet. My prayers are out there for everyone... |
 |
September 9th 2001 Okay! It's really very late. I woke up (fell asleep on the couch) then went to the bathroom
and then thought maybe I should write a few words. I have a show tomorrow. Nothing major, but it's a small show,
so I have to keep this quick! Well, knowing me it won't be quick.
Well, what can I say about this years Maryland Seafood festival? Help! Jenn helped out
and we did three shows on Sat. The first and last shows were okay, but the middle show struck gold. It hit right
on the dime! What went wrong with the first and last shows you ask? Well, other than the wind being so..........windy,
they were okay. It was just a bit windy during the first show(and for the most part all day). I was trying to perform
one of my favorite opening effects, a classic in magic, and yes I have performed it on windy days...but, honestly
if you were a magician, then I could tell you exactly what went wrong. But, I have to say, with out giving away
the secret, I can't. Well, the stage was also a bit small. It was really a platform stage and I didn't have all
of pieces to it that I should have. It came in four sections. They only had two set up for now, and I was going
to get the others whenever. This was a usual at the festival. Anyway, I was starting to perform this effect in
a very cramped area, and then when I turned around (yes, apart of the magic I was performing) and BANG! My hand
hit another stand, and what I had in my hands (or should I say "floating") went crashing to the ground.
Outch! What could I do? Nothing! Just sweat it off and move on. So I did, I looked at the audience and smiled,
almost like I was saying, "Opps!" and it really didn't matter, because I didn't do enough to spoiled
the effect. Shew! So, for the second and third (last show) I took out that magical effect and things went much
smoother. I'd rather be safe than sorry and in some cases, less is more. The other problem that I had with the
first and third show was, on the Metamorphosis,
the curtain snagged when Jenn raised it above her head. Again, a wind problem...but that one I could not avoid,
it was a hit and miss, and it hit twice. The escape was fine, and I'm sure very few people really knew if there
was any sort of a problem. I'm sure a few magicians who have done the Metamorphosis would have probably guessed it...but, for the most part it wasn't an over all
big problem. There are worse things that could have happened. Jenn, as usual, YOU shined and I thank you again
for doing a great show. Ohhh! I sold only one shirt, but that was okay. After Jenn left, I hung out at the festival
a bit longer and went to where the live music was playing. There was a group playing called the
"Clones of Funk" and yes, I knew a few band members and was envied up, so I got up on stage
and dance my butt off for the final part of the show! Loved it as usual. What about my messed up knee you ask?
Well, it hurt a lot at first, but once it got warmed up, my knee felt great. I wish I had photos to show you.
Sunday? Well, Jenn couldn't be there to help out and Cindy had a few problems, so I was left all by my lonesome
to perform. It wasn't anything I couldn't handle. Most of my shows there, and for the most part are performed solo.
But, in the last few years Jenn has helped, I got really used to her being there. I really wanted to perform the
Metamorphosis, though
I guess, if the audience doesn't know what I'm performing it wouldn't matter. Well, to my surprise, except for
the wind again, sunburn, and some discrepancies with a MD Seafood Staff member, the shows were great! Quite a few
people remembered me from High School and came up to say hello. That was really nice. I won a US Marines T-Shirt
for doing 25 chin-ups. Minimum was 20 reps. I felt proud, I hadn't done that in years. Well, when I workout, I
do pull-up (palm grip outwards). I didn't think I'd get past 15. Met another fellow magician also. Wee chatted
a bit, it was cool. Again, once I was packed up, I went down to where the live music was...
Mama Jama, one of my favorite local bands was playing.
You have to see them to believe it. They can play music that would make even the most rhythm-less dancer dance.
I had my digital camera with me and was taking a few photos, when again, I was called up on stage to dance with
the group. No, again I didn't have any photos of me dancing...and I couldn't find someone who wasn't or at least
didn't look like they were either drinking or knew how to use a camera. But, I didn't get a few photos of them
and will post them up on my communities pages: Yahoo!
The Jack Julius Fan Club or Webshots Community - slghtofhan's Community Page. I'll be adding photos to these and the others
I have listed under Special Links section...check it out! |

September 5th 2001 It's really, really late, like 3:00 am. I have a Physical Therapy app. for my knee tomorrow.
Hope they can fix something. I didn't have time to separate Sept. on a new page, but I will. Lots of things going
on this week. The Maryland Seafood Festival Page
is coming I have an ad there now and you can see it. Yesterday I got pulled over by a cop...no ticket, just a warning
(I'll tell you more about that one). The Jack Julius Chat Room
2001 is back up...I have two chat areas now. One on my site and another one which is more public. Check them
