Past What's New For June 2001

My thought of the day June 30th 2001 Wow! What a weekend! July 4th is here already, only 3 days away. You can come see me in the Annapolis, Parade, I'll be skating, dancing and doing magic on skates. That's during the parade. Well, My show in Easton, Maryland was okay. It was windy and I was performing out side. But, the people who watched loved it, and I had some little fans hang around while I put things away. Well, that wasn't the highlight of my day...driving about 2 hours from Easton to Hagerstown, Maryland to see my assistant, Jenn in the Miss Maryland Pageant was! It was fun, I took some pics and hope to have them up her today or tomorrow. Anyway, after the Pageant, there was a sold out dinner and awards ceremony. I didn't have tickets. But, they got me in, magically! Jenn's two little brothers, mom, dad and boyfriend Keith were there. I ate, danced...knee was hurting...but, I had tons of fun. The drive back was not fun. I didn't get home until the sun came up. I had to pull over to sleep for a few. So, check back for the Pageant pics okay! See you soon!
My thought of the day June 25th 2001 Success! Today I did three shows for the MD State Parks, at three different community centers. The first two went well, but the third was a bit off. Well, the show went well, but the kids were not as responsive as the first two groups. It was later in the day, so I'm sure they were a bit tired. One of the counselors was almost falling asleep while I was performing. Those kids must have worn him out! I wanted to throw something at him, to keep his attention but he looked like he could use the sleep, even if it was during my show. I think the kids enjoyed it, but they just didn't have the energy of the other two shows. The space was a bit smaller than the other places, but I thought it went well. Anyway, there was something that happened at the first show, that I must say...and you tell me who was right or wrong? Ok? I was performing, and in the middle of my show, one of the leading head Camp Counselors started talking. I don't mean the quiet whisper-chit-chat that most adults do during a show. She started talking like no one else was around. What? Not during my show.! I'm sorry, but I could not allow this disruptive behavior . So, I did my normal "Jack" thing I do, and whistled, got here attention, she turned around and I said, something to the affect, "I can hear you, please keep it down, there are people trying to watch the show!" I smiled, and said," Thank YOU!" Then she pulled the counselor outside, next to a door that was open, and I could still hear her. So, I told someone to close the door. Well, I don't know about you, but I thought that was very rude of her, don't you? Well, she came back after the show when I was packing up and said, "Excuse, me ... I didn't appreciate you whistling at me like I was a dog...I was trying to tell one of the counselors something..."Yada! Yada! Well, I felt had she respected me as a performer, and pulled the person outside or somewhere else, I wouldn't have to whistle at her," ...like a dog!" She did try to make it seem as though I should have said or did something differently. Either way... I felt it was really rude what she did! So, I did what I had to to get her attention so that I could contunue.
My thought of the day June 24th 2001 What a busy week. Well, it's really late. But I wanted to make sure I wrote something in here. I started performing at the Crown Movie Theater again on Wed & There Morn at 8:30 am. in the Annapolis Mall! Yes, it's free! I have pictures from the first show. They'll be up this week, so check back! The shows this weekend went well. Saturday's shows went great...I have some really good pictures of the kids having fun with me. Sunday at the Wine, Jazz & Arts festival? Well, honestly, I've had things go wrong in a show before...but this was like I was asleep while I was performing. Nothing was working right. The first show was a disaster. Well, only a few things went wrong, but to me it seemed like more, and I don't think the audience had a clue. Thank God, it wasn't a big crowd. The second show was smoother than silk. It went went perfectly. Jenn, my regular assistant wasn't with me. She's preparing for the Miss. Maryland Pageant. I had another friend help help out. Though I don't think her heart is in the performing, it went okay! I didn't sell any shirts :o( Bummer! Well this week is a busy one also. See ya soon!
My thought of the day June 17th -18th 2001 Happy Fathers Day, Dad! I'll have to find a good photo of him to show you all. Anyway, I'm sure I won't have much time to write this week, but just in case...don't forget that the Wine, Jazz & Arts Festival is this coming weekend. I got a really nice e-mail from one of the parents whose son took my Magic Camp Workshop. Here is what she wrote:
"Thanks again for teaching Ross so much and giving him the tips he needs to improve. Among other things, Ross has said several times, "That guy Jack is soooooo nice." In case you don't realize it, that says a lot more than the words alone."

Ross's mom
a.k.a. Diane
My thought of the day June 17th 2001 I just woke up! It's late, or early depending on how you look at it. Actually, someone called, but we won't mention any names. So, I guess I'm going to write for a few. The Magic Camp was a success, even it the masses didn't know I was teaching. I'd rather have one good student who understood and learned everything I taught instead of 20 bad students who had no clue as to what I was trying to teach. Congratulations to Ross! Who I think will surprise the Magic community very soon. I even gave Ross a chance to perform publicly a few of the new tricks that he learned. He did GREAT! Everybody loved him, some even thought he was my son. No! But, if I had a son? One day, I sure hope that he'd be exactly like Ross!

The Mime Workshop went well. They even got to wear a white face at the end. Yes, I got a photo of some of them. it was lots of fun. Thank you CTA for being a part of the Workshop. I'm tired. Today I was supposed to rest, well, someone called for a show last yesterday. So, I may take another rest day and put it to work. I was going to sleep in. Okay, well, I have to go now. I'll chat to ya later.
My thought of the day June 14th 2001 Well, tomorrow is the last day of the camp...then I have a show in the afternoon. Sat is the Mime Workshop! You can still register or just show up. I'll tell you more later...gotta go get ready! :o)
My thought of the day June 13th 2001 Today was one of those days where some things can go wrong. I was performing at Chevys of Annapolis, again. As usual I didn't leave until later, almost 11:00. Well, for the most part things went well. But, there was one table where everything started out okay. Then one of my favorite tricks backfired in my face (It didn't work)! So, I felt like a fool for a bit trying to skillfully cover my mishap. I did a few more trick, and things got a bit ironed out. I hope they forgot about the one that sucked. I didn't, but I did learn what not to do. Anyway, it was a learning experience. Good Night! It's late!
My thought of the day June 12th 2001 Well, this is a busy week. I'll be teaching magic all week, Wed, performing at Chevys in Annapolis (come see me live), a show on Friday, Mime Workshop on Sat. Help! Nah! I can handle it. This is normal pressure to me. My Mime workshop is going to be great fun, c'mom adults, you too! Anyway, I have to go, because I have to make some updates on my web site.
My thought of the day June 9th & 10th 2001 One thing I really enjoy is when I perform and everything runs smoothly. I know I've probably said that a billion times. But, it make me feel like the people watching are enjoying it just as much as I am. Don't get me wrong, I've done many a show-perfectly-for a totally dead audience. I get most of my performing energy from people. If they are enjoying me, that that makes me feel like I'm on top of the world and the better I perform. The Magic is going okay, not as many showed up as I'd like, but, that again, this is the testing period. Most people already enrolled their kids in the camps for the summer. I'm going to do one more in August from the 20th to the 24. I'm also going to cut the price a bit to get more people into in. and not have any kits or books. Ahhhh! Okay, I'm totally frustrated! I worked hard on the workshop booklet! Well, I may get back into private teaching...not as much pressure.
My thought of the day June 6th 2001 About 12:30 am. Wow! June is here...Today was a very long day. This evening I performed a bit of close-up magic at Chevys Mexican Restaurant in Annapolis, right around the corner from the Harbor Center. Anyway, it was fun! I was supposed to work from 6:30 until 8:30...well, I didn't leave until 11:30. I was going to work out at the gym and do a few other things. I can't help myself, I get into entertaining and the time just flies.
This Past weekend was a busy one. Three shows on Saturday and one on Sunday. They went well! Thank you Jenn for your wonderful help again. We did two shows together on Sat. well, three, but the second two were larger type show stuff. To finish the day we did a Mardi Graw show...and performed the metamorphosis under a tent totally surrounded. People were only 3 to 5 feet away. What's the Metamorphosis? Originated by Harry Houdini, it an escape effect. Here is the slim version: I get my wrists changed and pad locked, then I get placed in to a bag (that was checked) and is tied and inside of a solid wood crate box. The lid is put on, then padlocked shut by 4 volunteers. My assistant, Jenn, gets on top of the trunk. Raises a curtain that surround the trunk tightly. Looks around, says, "Are you ready? Watch!" not even a second goes by, she raises the curtain over her head...then it's lowered....and I'm standing there...wearing s different shirt, and on top of the trunk. I lower the curtain-drop it- to the floor or ground, depending where we are performing.. The trunk is examined, the padlocks are still locked. Then the locks are unlocked, lid taken off and someone is where I was, in the bag. The bag is untied to reveal Jenn in the bag and wrist chained. TA! DA! It only taks place in a second! I love that escape! Good Night! Well, actually, good morning!
