My Personal & Performing History
| When I was very young, about 7 years old, I always had an interest in the arts whether they were visual or performing. If you'd like to read more detail about my child hold check out my Personal Page. Anyway, I loved art and drawing but, I especially loved Magic and Getting magic tricks for my birthday or Christmas. Not to mention learning quite a few tricks every now and then from my school principal (when I misbehaved on purpose) was when it really got started. Then my uncle introduced me to the history of magic and I started to read about Harry Houdini and then began doing Escapes; challenging my school, my friends and community. As you can see in this "Jail Escape" photo of me (on the right) and my friends Tom (left) Nate (center). This photo was taken in Sept 1977 at the Westminster, Maryland Jail for the Carroll County Heart Association. Yes, we were in the News! I really loved being on stage and having the spotlight. Tom, on the left is still performing Magic in Westminster, Maryland. Shortly after that, I began to learn more about the history of magic and those Magicians whose' lives had changed the lives of many soon to be magicians. I practiced more, got deeper into Magic, and joined many local magic clubs. When I was about fourteen, I began to get interested in other performing arts like Pantomime. I've always had an interest in performers like Charlie Chaplin , Buster Keton & other silent film stars. I then began to watch Performers like Pantomime artist Marcel Marceau. As a kid I enjoyed watching The Red Skelton Show and saw many of his performances after that. Knee deep in Magic, around 1976 I went to New York to the "Louis Tannan" Magic Camp, where I really began to love performing on stage and being in the spot light. I really loved how what I did could make someone smile.
| | | Then in the late 70's the great Mime duo of Shields & Yarnell had a TV show that would change my life. I learned to do many unique things because of them. Doing the "Robotic" style of performance was my favorite. In school I would perform it in the hallways before class, or at the movies while waiting in line. You may even catch me performing a "Robotic" waiter at Ledo Pizza. As you can see in this photo of me Street Performing during a Bastille Day Celebration in the early 1980's at the famous Maryland Inn on Main Street in Annapolis. Soon after that Another performer would affect my life. Doug Henning! He was the first to do the Annual Magic Specials. But, the first few he performed were live. I learned quite a bit from him. David Copperfield soon followed. | | In the Mid 1980's FlashDance and many other string of movies began to showcase street performers and their unique styles. Break Dancing (Hip-Hop dance)and a wave of rap artists swept the nation. I started to learn the street styles of Dance and roller skating and began integrating that into my show and street performing act. I was dancing on skates while performing Mime and Magic. I was different! Break Dancing and many other forms of street dance got my attention. I liked those unique styles so much that I began teaching them to many groups and even schools and organizations. I created a dance group and began touring with it along with my shows. It was a hit! Then word got out! The News Papers and Local TV shows wanted interviews. During that time I've written, produced, and directed several hit plays in the Annapolis area which included these performing arts. I've also been in short Films, Music Videos and on TV. | | It's 2007 now, and I've performed for as little as one and as many as several thousand. I have done countless performances for private clients as well as some of the largest corporate clients in and out of the country, including BGE, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Energy, Pepsi Cola Co, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Pillsbury, Md Dept. Of Transportation, Hershey Theater and at the White House, to name a few.
And every show, no matter how big or how small, is a performance that I will learn and grow from every time. I perform sevral hundred shows a year, big and small. In the past few years there have been some wonderful shows I will never forget. I had the privilege of performing with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for their Halloween event. It was really something to be on that stage with a live Orchestra playing behind me. I even got to stick Dan-the conductors head, into a box and put sword through it...then making his head vanish! That was fun! I was able to perform some very beautiful magic, and finished with the "Metamorphosis" to the Raiders of The Lost Arch theme with the beautiful Jenn Plain (who at the time was the current "Miss. Greater Annapolis") It's a show I will remember forever! I also performed down at the Baltimore Inner Harbor in the Amphitheater. It was raw fun! Click Here to see when I perform during the spring and summer months.
Currently you can see me live performing close-up magic at Chevy's (in Edgewater, Maryland) every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 PM. But call first as I may be busy with other shows. I have many big plans and new magic to learn for this coming year. So keep checking back for more added photos, articles, and as always, for "What's New!" What is in store for this year? We shall see. |
