Counselling fees vary by practitioner. I provide a sliding scale based on the ability of each client to pay. The range is $50 to $80 per 50 minute session.
Most clients have issues that take multiple sessions. Clients make the most progress with regular sessions. Typically clients choose weekly or bi-weekly sessions over a 6 week to 12 month period.
When sessions are further apart, especially in the first month or two, focus and momentum may diminish and progress may be slowed. I typically recommend a weekly session for the first 4 to 6 weeks and then re-assess at that point.
A therapeutic plan will be established during your assessment interview which is typically done within the first 2 or 3 sessions.
Occasionally an introductory meeting is scheduled with the client at no charge or obligation, prior to formal sessions. This session is used to determine if there is a good fit between the therapist and the client.
What does counselling cost? It varies with each client based on the factors outlined above. This is something that can be discussed during the first, no-charge, introductory session.
Some clients have been able to deduct the costs of therapy on their tax form as a medical expense, however, please check with your tax advisor.
In some cases, therapy sessions may be covered by your employer or private insurance plan.
