Counselling Sessions

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

To determine if counselling is appropriate for you, answer the following questions:

  • Are you unhappy or frustrated with some aspect of your life?
  • Do you find yourself walking on eggshells?
  • Is there an "Elephant In The Room" that you avoid?
  • Do you want to improve your personal relationships?
  • Are you looking for growth or change in your life?
  • Are you willing to devote time for making changes in your life?

If you answered yes to any of the above, and you are willing to change, counselling may be right for you.

Counselling Sessions

What happens in a counselling session?

- There will be space for you to express your concerns
- You will be heard
- You can gain a helpful perspective
- You will engage in hands on learning (e.g. role play)
- Practical problem solving

Counselling Sessions

How long is a counselling session?

Sessions take approximately 50 minutes. In some cases the therapist will plan a double session, but that is unusual. Each session will start on time. Typically other appointments are scheduled in the next time period so it is important to be on time to ensure time for a full session. You should plan to arrive 5 minutes before your session and you may want to take 5 minutes after your session to collect your thoughts. If you plan for an hour you will be fine.

Counselling Sessions

How much does counselling cost?

Counselling fees vary by practitioner.  I provide a sliding scale based on the ability of each client to pay.  The range is $50 to $80 per 50 minute session.

Most clients have issues that take multiple sessions.  Clients make the most progress with regular sessions.  Typically clients choose weekly or bi-weekly sessions over a 6 week to 12 month period.

When sessions are further apart, especially in the first month or two, focus and momentum may diminish and progress may be slowed.  I typically recommend a weekly session for the first 4 to 6 weeks and then re-assess at that point.

A therapeutic plan will be established during your assessment interview which is typically done within the first 2 or 3 sessions.

Occasionally  an introductory meeting  is scheduled with the client at no charge or obligation, prior to formal sessions.  This session is used to determine if there is a good fit between the therapist and the client.

What does counselling cost?  It varies with each client based on the factors outlined above.  This is something that can be discussed during the first, no-charge, introductory session.

Some clients have been able to deduct the costs of therapy on their tax form as a medical expense, however, please check with your tax advisor.

In some cases, therapy sessions may be covered by your employer or private insurance plan.
