“The eye sees only
what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”
----Robertson Davies
Now that you understand that
Hypoism is a disease and have a working knowledge of the concepts and
vocabulary, we can peer into the future to envision how things will be when all
these issues are accepted and approved by pundits as well as the general
population. Right now, we use words like prevention, avoidance, choice, education, drug-free
children, etc. Of course, we all realize now that these words are meaningless
when they refer to Hypoism and addictions. Societal denial as it is practiced
today, using the P/R paradigm, ensures that our present day hypoics will all be
addicted and use their addictions. That is the power of societal denial. The
only choice we have is between breaking our collective denial of the truth of
Hypoism and its ramifications and moving on into the world I will briefly try
to envision with your cooperation, or staying where we are today and living
with these ramifications. That is our
choice as individuals and as a society.
The present view, as I have clearly
shown, leads to dead or jailed
addicts, kids and families in trouble, divorce, spousal abuse, child abuse,
pedophilia, gambling debts, sexual and drug-use transmission of disease,
drug-associated crimes and violence (due to high prices of drugs), drunk
driving mortalities and morbidities, and deadly cults and gangs. Addictions are
not the problem. The problem is that people (hypoics) are not allowed to be
addicts—not allowed by society and not allowed by themselves; societal denial
leading to personal denial. How does an addict deal with
that? He must deny his Hypoism and his addictions. The hypoic must, therefore,
go underground to act out his addiction
(inexorably—no choice). Underground and in secret the addictions rule and all
the consequences occur, like it or not, illegal or not, violent or not, against
the addict’s will or not, just say no or not, drug-free schools or not, people
for a drug-free society or not! Societal
denial of Hypoism actually causes all these consequences and more. Prohibition of the addiction never has and never will
stop the addiction. Prevention of addiction does not occur. Punishing
addicts never has and never will get rid of addictions. Get real everyone.
Is the present social policy working or not? You don’t care? Addiction is just
wrong and must be eliminated? Addicts must be punished even if it kills you and
your kids? OK, if that’s your position, then all I can do is laugh, or cry, or
wring my hands, gnash my teeth. I give up.
If you choose (this is done at the
level of the individual) to break your “societal denial,” choose reality, and
dump self-righteous indignation against the immorality of addictions, the
future can look something like the following. (The 12 Steps are for hypoics;
non-hypoics don’t need them. The rest of the ideas, though, are for everyone.)
Phase 1. As the concept of Hypoism is becoming incorporated into
society, there is a transition period where all previously held views are still
in effect for those who can’t seem to get the truth. Thus, all the old
consequences still occur, but less and less. People get into 12 Step recovery
in larger numbers and the jails are emptying. Lots of the old stuff is still
happening but less often. It takes a long time for all the dinosaurs (old
farts) to die off; sort of like the 40 years in the desert during the exodus.
These are a few suggestions for what I’d
like to see happen with A.A. during this transition period.
1. Eliminate the anonymity
business and come out of the closet—Hypoic Pride. If we encounter
discrimination, the National Association for the Advancement and Advocacy of Addictions
(N4A) will fight it tooth and nail. Take the high ground for addicts.
2. Support the N4A and its programs. Allow and
prompt A.A. people to participate in recovery research which will, hopefully,
lead to valid improvements in recovery principles. Support Hypoism research and
acknowledge the importance of understanding the basis of the disease to
members, rather than the blind faith approach. Become proactive for recovery.
Take back the power we have naively, fearfully, and irresponsibly given to the
P/R paradigm. Take responsibility for our future like any other disease, such
as have heart disease, diabetes, and cancer victims.
3. Revise the literature to reflect Bill Wilson‘s later changes in disease
and recovery concepts. Turn A.A. into what it was always meant to be—a place to
do recovery rather than a religion oriented cult. Acknowledge that religion may
have its place for any people who want or need to use it on an individual
basis, but not as the basis for recovery. Remove Bill Wilson from the guru
position into which he has been inadvertently placed.
4. Open the doors of A.A. to all hypoics who want
or need to join. Allow completely open sharing of all personal Hypoism issues.
Put no restrictions on what people can share at meetings. Begin the transition
to recovery from Hypoism instead of just alcohol addiction.
Phase 2. Enter the land of milk and honey. Hypoism is accepted and
is part of the common lingo and lexicon. The early signs and symptoms are
easily recognized. People no longer have to hide them because the stigma is
gone. The diagnosis of Hypoism and its associated patients, hypoics, have their
local and national associations, 800 numbers, and 12 Step groups. School social
workers (recovering hypoics instead of hypoics in denial) and school
psychologists happily spend time directing willing hypoic students into 12 Step
programs where their parents already are. Addictions are readily seen as
symptoms and addicts are smoothly moved into the helping hands of accepting recovering
hypoics. Jails are mostly relics except for holding the most incorrigible
violent actors. Most of the potentially violent hypoics have long since entered
12 Step programs and are helping other violence addicts deal with their
addictions. Drug cartels have dried up and disappeared for lack of business and
income. The streets are safe. The money that used to be wasted on the drug war, jails, the criminal justice
system, and buying drugs and guns is used to actually help people and support
people who need it, as well as the arts and hobbies of all these recovering
hypoics. Hypoics no longer appear on TV talk shows to be displayed as freaks
for the afternoon entertainment of the masses. All diversity (including limbic
diversity) is finally appreciated as an asset rather than a deviance,
perversion, or disease that needs to be exterminated. End of HYPOIC GENOCIDE. We enter the phase of
human social culture where real enlightenment replaces superstitious
enlightenment. Love and spirituality are now seen as actions and
not just pleasant feelings. Real love is being practiced, not just written
about. The phony concept of self-sufficiency takes its place in the museums of
human relics replaced by the real nature of humans, inter-dependency, and the
extended family. Self-righteousness, discrimination, lying, and
perjury are the only non-violent crimes receiving a prison term. Bankruptcy and
divorce are abolished. People are held responsible for all contracts. There is
total freedom of religion, but it’s just not discussed in public, and is no
longer tax exempt. No one who wants to run for public office will be allowed to
be a candidate. Politicians will be drafted from the populace for set terms and
paid well for the duty. Racism is seen for what it is, an ancient instinct that
no longer works for society’s benefit, and, therefore, is not denied like the
rest of our instincts are no longer denied. However, because it is no longer
denied, it no longer is acted out. Racial and religious statehood disappears.
Countries are now based on geography. Social and personal harmony reign within
the limits of humans, who know they are just animals, allowed by chance to
enjoy living on this beautiful planet. The environment blooms and all species
are allowed to share the bountySH .
Let me sum up the situation in ten
words or less:
P/R
Paradigm à Addicts + fantasy = One BIG
Mess
HYPOISM
Paradigm à Addicts + reality = No Mess
The
choice is yours.
