     Subject DICKENS

Date Mon Jul 1 2002 16:39

Author Joan Nichols (joannichols11@yahoo.com)

In the literary mystery I've just finished writing and am now revising, a manuscript is found which may be an undiscovered manuscript by Dickens. The characters have reason to believe the manuscript is authentic to the late 1860s. It is bound in red morocco and looks like the bound manuscript of A CHRISTMAS CAROL now in the Morgan Library in New York. The handwriting is not Dickens', but the characters assume he had someone else make the final copy.

My question: if such a manuscript of an unknown and unpublished Dickens novel existed, what would it be worth?

Likely it would be worth several hundred thousand to several million dollars (extrapolated roughly from the July 15 19999 Sotheby's auction of the Dickens Archive). Of course, Dickens was known never to have had a manuscript fair-copied or written by someone else, except the manuscript of Child's History of England, which he had dictated to his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth.

Hello;
Im glad I found this site, it is excellent.
I have an edition of Martin Chuzzlewit, the thing is that it was printed by John Dicks in 1844 and advertises the christmas carol for 2pence rather than the 6pence Dickens had wanted.
Do you think it was an edition that was pulled because of problems as John Dicks app did not print any of Dickens works until end of 19th century. And never in this style.
If anyone can help me solve the puzzle I would be obliged, P>S the library of congress and the british library hve no records for said book.
With thanks
William

I have three volumes of a set of "The Works of Dickens" Published by P.F. Collier copywrite 1870. I am trying to find out what they might be worth and where to find someone that might be willing to purchase them. I attach a picture of the cover of one of them.

Author Bob Davis (gadshill@usa.net)

Dear Dennis:

Editions of Dickens Works by P. F. Collier are neither particularly interesting nor valuable. They were generally issued in 6 volumes, clustering groups of the novels in each. Overall they are usually quite fragile and poorly constructed. When issued, they were meant for mass distribution rather than as library ingredients.

I cannot ascribe an exact value, but many single volumes can be obtained readily at $6 to $10 per volume. For an outstanding volume in fresh condition with gilt intact, a maximum of $25 per volume may be obtained under ideal conditions.

I suggest that you approach a reputable book dealer or take a chance on eBay or similar auction.

Good luck!

Bob Davis

Subject Charles Dickens, "Christmas Wish"

Date Sat Mar 29 2003 02:08

Author Cynthia Gorton (cynthiagorton@charter.net)

I am trying to research a leather bound book by the name "Christmas Wish Dickens". It has no dates, appears to be hand bound and hand pressed with only two colors. This book has a small water color print on the first couple pages. I can not find any referance of this book anywhere. I have been told by two sources that this book was written for his children only and was never circulated to the public.

Author K. White (catyade@yahoo.de)

Our family has received a 20 Volume Set of Dickens' Works published by P.F. Collier, New York, as a Christmas Gift.
It must have been a Library Edition as it contains partially Cards or Notes in the back of the books. They are except one or two in a fairly good condition incl. black and white Illustrations. I have not been able to figure the publishing date or much else. They are complete and the pages are gilted. It'd be appreciated to receive any kind of information about this set. Any idea when they may have been published and what if at all they may be worth anything? Despite whatever they may or may not valuable We appreciate this Set greatly and plan to keep it in the family.
Thank You and best regards,
The White-Family
