TAKS Test Tips & Strategies
-
Research Associates Aaron Kercheval and Sharon Newbill (2002) reported the key effective test preparation strategies included:
- Direct instruction in test-taking skills
- Extensive use of practice tests
- Instructional practice altered to mirror form and content of the proficiency tests
- Intervention strategies to identify students needing help to pass proficiency tests Variety of intervention/remediation programs offered at variety of times during school day, and before/after school
- Intervention specialists hired or teachers reassigned or paid to conduct remediation programs
- Students recognized and rewarded for success (p. 37).
According to Douglas Reeves (2004), "Even if the state test is dominated by lower-level thinking skills and questions are posed in a multiple-choice format, the best preparation for such tests is not mindless testing drills, but extensive student writing, accompanied by thinking, analysis, and reasoning" (p. 92).
Emphasis on literacy was another key effective practice in improved school districts (Kercheval & Newbill, 2002). In other words, good instruction is the best test preparation!

EDUCATIONAL USES OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING
-
"Digital Storytelling is a fantastic way to engage students, teachers and just about anyone else who has ever wanted to be the next Ken Burns or Steven Spielberg. Educators at all levels can use Digital Storytelling in many ways, from introducing new material, to helping students learn to conduct research, and help students organize their ideas and learn to write for an audience. Many different evaluation instruments are available for educators to assess student performance in Digital Storytelling. Here you will find some pre-made evaluation options as well as information on how to create your own evaluation resources. The site consists of the following sections: Introduction, Educational Goals and Objectives, Example Stories, Technology Tools, Evaluation, and Additional Resources. Created by Bernard R. Robin, Ph.D., Instructional Technology Program, College of Education, University of Houston."

Photojournalistas.com
-
Published expository piece and photographs.
Like many online photography zines, this site features crisp, attractive photography, but unlike most, it goes beyond the superficial. The creators and contributors aim their lenses at areas ignored by other publications. Get an up-close look at a way of life slowly disappearing before our eyes -- that of the family-run dairy farm in New England. Or view a thriving world you may have never heard of, such as the semi-pro football leagues of America. Elsewhere on the site, a photojournalist turns his camera towards broken-down cars, while another serves up images from a huge rowing event called the Head of the Charles Regatta. Each story includes the author/photographer's profile, as well as an article or interview explaining how and why each photojournalist focused on the subject. The site bursts with interesting subject matter, so take your time and savor the experience.

PATH: Profect for the Active Teaching of American History
-
Region IV
Funded by a $988,290 U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History Grant, this collaborative project between Region IV ESC, the University of Houston, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is designed to improve teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history by creating a comprehensive and sustainable program of professional development that can serve as a model for other school districts throughout the state and nation.
This project emphasizes six key elements:
- Improving teachers' knowledge of American history as a separate subject matter within the core curriculum;
- Identifying effective teaching strategies, including collaborative projects and hands-on, active-learning activities, that teachers can use to improve instruction and raise student achievement, especially among students with Low English Proficiency;
- Training teachers to make effective use of new electronic communication and computer technologies, as well as older technologies, such as tape recorders, to stimulate history learning;
- Creating a core group of experienced, knowledgeable, well-trained teacher-mentors who can serve as coaches for other teachers in their schools and for pre-service teachers and teacher training students at the University of Houston;
- Providing a forum where professional historians, museum professionals, and classroom teachers can interact on an on-going basis and serve each others' needs; and
- Producing extensive online resources, model lesson plans, and project-oriented activities designed to transform the study of American history by emphasizing collaborative, hands-on projects and active student learning.

Power Proofreading
-
From Houghton Mifflin English
Great site for proofreading. The student types his name and then selects a grade level with several proofreading options. The student clicks on the error and a box appears. The student then types in the correct punctuation, spelling, etc. After he completes the activity, the student can check his score immediately. Great learning strategy.
