Emma

It is with great pleasure we announce that precious Emma has been adopted.

She is now with her ‘forever’ family to live the good life she so deserves.

All of us at CRLNE want to express our sincerest ‘thank you’s’ to all who donated money to Emma’s fund.

The surgery saved her life!  We also want to thank those that have followed her story to this happy ending.

Respectfully,

Diane Mancini

CRLNE-President

A collie breeder in Florida has passed on this important information. She has given us permission to post on this website

From: Gail Currie [mailto:rgcurrie@bellsouth.net]

Subject: Heartworm Medicine Issue

I have a phone call from 2 of my previous puppy buyers with questions regarding a new heartworm medication that their vets are encouraging them to use and luckily for their beloved pets they have thought first to call and ask me.  The new medication is Advantage Multi  [TM] Don't use this! which contains avermectin which is of course in the ivermectin family and can be deadly to collies.  All my pups are sold with an information packet that includes the warning not to use any form of ivermectin and instead to use Interceptor or Sentinel for heartworm protection.  One of the owners who contacted me said her vet told her they were not carrying Interceptor any longer because there were studies that showed it was not working at killing the worms associated with heartworm.  I checked with Dr. Cindi Bossart on this and she said that this was not true and that Interceptor was still one of the best heartworm medications for collies.  She confirmed this by speaking with her hospital personnel who is the buyer for all medications used at the hospital.

If you think it appropriate would you send out an email to your collie email group advising them of this new product and that it should not be used on collies and other breeds that have a sensitivity to the aver/ivermectin group.  As you can see on the information sheet from their website it states right on the package that some breeds may have a problem with the ingredients, but then also states that even with severely affected dogs they have recovered with intensive vet care!

Here is the link to the product http://www.advantagemulti.com/pdfs/Advantage_Multi_Dog.pdf Also this is the link to the homepage http://www.advantagemulti.com/

Thanks

Collie Rescue of Central NJ sent an email regarding the new strain of Parvo, called 2c.  Unfortunately they had 2 foster puppies die this week.  The puppies had been pulled from a shelter and were supposedly vaccinated.  Their vet feels it may have been this new strain of Parvo.  There have also been cases in adult vaccinated dogs, which indicates that the current vaccines are not providing protection from this new strain.

Please follow the link below for more information on the 2c Parvo.  Also, talk with your vet about your collies current vaccine.

    Respectfully,

    Diane Mancini

Did you know -- February is Canine Weight Check Month

Remember your New Year's Resolution?

Has it already gone by the wayside?  Especially that resolution of losing weight?  Well, if your resolution hasn't held up to the test of time, how about your collie?

February 2008 has been designated as 'The National Canine Weight Check' month.  Did you know that almost half of the canines in the USA are overweight!!!  YIKES!

Veterinarians across the country have teamed up and are offering a free weight assessment for your canine!  Check with your own vet to find out if they are participating.  Or you can go to: CanineWeightCheck.com to find a vet near you that is.

Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for participants.

DOG BEHAVIOR STUDY (Thyroid)This dog behavior study is looking for dogs that are aggressive to their owners and also have a thyroid problem. The double-blind study will focus on borderline cases, dogs that have normal thyroid levels but are in the bottom 20th percentile of the normal thyroid hormone level range. Half of these dogs will receive thyroid hormone supplements that will bring them to the upper part of the normal range and the other half will receive a placebo. The study will then assess if treating the thyroid problem decreases the aggressive behavior. The study lasts for ten weeks. The first two weeks are a baseline phase when the owners count the number of aggressive episodes that occur per day and document them on a form. Then the dog’s aggressive behavior is monitored again for the next 6 weeks after dog gets the supplement. The participants can be from any part of the country and do not have to bring the dogs to Tufts in order to participate.

In order to qualify, a dog must be aggressive (growl, lift a lip, snarl or bite) to a human family member 4 - 5 times/week, and not be currently being treated for a thyroid condition. Please contact Nicole Cottam, Behavior Service Coordinator, at 508-887-4802 (nicole.cottam@tuft.edu) for more information.

EDUCATION

As announced in our December newsletter, CRLNE is going to provide articles, ideas, discussions on all sorts of canine subjects via our website -  From diseases to dentistry, parasites to pampering, grooming to growling!

The CRLNE Board of Directors has appointed an Education Coordinator to research and write all these informative articles for all to enjoy.  This person has many years of rescue and education experience under her 'collar' (sorry) and we are delighted she has taken on this project.  I would like to introduce our newly appointed Education Coordinator-Pam Frazier!

    Happy reading.
