Subject SEELEY COLLIE SEIZURE

Date Tue Nov 6 2007 21:10

Author Doreen

First let me say that I am grateful that the dogs have been rescued and NEVER have to live with such an evil woman ever again. But I’m fuming! Only 1 count of animal cruelty for all the torture that woman did to those poor defenseless dogs? 3 years probation? No animals for 3 years? They’ve got to be kidding!! This mean and hateful woman should NEVER be allowed to own any animals. She also should be ordered to pay for the medical care that the dogs will need. JEESH!
Personally, I feel that when people treat any type of animal in an unkind way, they should be made to live in the same conditions. Maybe then...and only then...will they realize the impact of their horrible actions.
I guess the thing that makes me the most angry, is that if it were humans that this was being done to, we all know that the consequences would be much different.
Thank you to all the rescuers out there who help those who don't have a voice.

We have finally been matched with a new collie and from what I have heard (over the phone) he is a perfect friend. I am really excited about meeting him for the first time, in March when my spring vacation starts. Gus is really adjusting to his new surroundings and is loving the non-stop attention that my parents are giving him! Thank you so much for rescuing him and all the other collies that deserve a second chance.

Sincerely,

I'm as disgusted as you Doreen ---how could they only give this woman 3 years probation!! Then when that is up she can get more dogs! Not right! She should have community time, at at shelter. She should be made to PAY for some of the medical bills for these poor babies.SHE SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED ANIMALS AGAIN! I hope The Collie Rescue will be able to get some of these dogs and find them homes. I myself would love to try and adopt one of them. How heart breaking to read these dogs still wag their tails after living in such conditions. I want to wrap my arms around all of them!

I GREATLY ADMIRE THE WORK THAT YOU DO AND I WISH THAT IT WERE POSSIBLE FOR SOMEONE WHO WISHES TO ADOPT OUTSIDE OF N.E. TO BE CONSIDERED. THE LI RESCUE GROUP MIGHT BE WILLING TO SEND A MEMBER TO INSPECT THE HOME AND INTERVIEW A POTENTIAL FAMILY AS LONG AS THE APOTIVE FAMILY WOULD BE WILLING TO PICK UP THE COLLIE IN PERSON. SURELY YOU GET SIMILAR REQUESTS FROM PEOPLE OUTSIDE N.E. AS A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN LOOKING TO ADOPT A COLLIE FOR OVER A YEAR NOW I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF I COULD QUALIFY TO ADOPT EVEN IF I HAD TO TRAVEL A DISTANCE TO BRING A COLLIE TO A LOVING, KNOWLEDGIBLE HOME. AS A FORMER COLLIE OWNER I KNOW THAT THERE IS NO OTHER DOG QUITE LIKE A COLLIE. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. BEVERLY MCDERMOTT FLUSHING NEW YORK

Author Elaine (missemg@yahoo.com)

I agree with Beverly. I am a long time ower of collies, raising some from puppies, and adopting others. I am looking for another one to bring into my family and have been unable to find one locally. I have contacted Collie Rescue groups out of area and they will not adopt out to me. I am willing to drive to pick up the dog. This is very frustrating. I'm on a list to be called about the Seeley Dogs, but it has been weeks and I have heard nothing. Time is marching one for one of my dogs to have a playmate. My 7 year old wants a dog to play with - - and my 12 year old doesn't want to play.
Here I am willing to give a loving home to a collie - and I cannot find a collie!! I'm a bit frustrated right now. I am not looking for a puppy...I would love an older dog.

I understand all of your frustrations of trying to adopt a 'rescue' collie. Please believe me when I say that this is NO reflection on you/your family/your home personally. Our bylaws dictate that a Collie Rescue League of NEW ENGLAND volunteer must do the home visit, and sometimes it's impossible to ask someone to travel hours to do a visit. I'm sure you understand that ALL of us our volunteers and the majority of us work FULL time. If you would like to discuss this further, please email crlneinof@aol.com and I will gladly continue this conversation with you. Especially in regard to the Seeley collies.
The one thing I do NOT want to do is turn you away from attemtping to adopt a collie. They are the BEST breed of dog, in my opinion. (Sorry to my husband who feels that the Brittany is the best.)
Please email me for further discussion!

Author Barb Giffin (TGIFvt2@msn.com)

Congratulation on Emma's adoption. Secondly, I want to thank you for posting info about the Seeley Collie Seizure and the shelter where they were being housed. By the way....the people that we met from the shelter are very kind. Thank you.

We had never been dog parents, but had both been around collies when we were children. We knew the kind and gentle souls that they are....and also the fireballs of energy that the younger ones are. I wanted a dog that I didn't have to housetrain, and one that was a bit older...one that I wouldn't be responsible for spaying or care afterwards. That is a hard part for me, to see them in pain. Emma was who we hoped to adopt.

However, feeling that we had wasted over a year waiting for YOUR Emma, we went onto the Seeley Collie Seizure site and the SPCA of Upstate NY. One January morning we loaded the kids into the car and drove almost 2 hours to their Pet adoption days. We came home with a most precious cargo asleep on the kid's laps all of the way. We adopted a collie mix who was rescued from Tennessee. She was just 11 weeks old. She was on the list to be euthanized at the shelter where she was housed and had been a transported rescue to NY the day before.

Yes, I had to housetrain her in the middle of a cold January. I liken it to potty training a child. I have had 3. Yes, I had to hold her after she was spayed and care for her and it was hard. Yes, I had to teach her not to bite or to chew on things she shouldn't. She knows that her toys are for that now and she has a bucket full. She is a genius and she is totally loved. She plays soccer every day with the kids. She runs and jumps and is very happy, healthy, and wonderful. She is now 6 months old. She is a beauty and turns heads where ever she goes, but more importantly, she is ours.

I am very happy that they didn't have the same hoops that your organization does. I only had to wait 9 months for a baby....not a year and a half for a puppy. I know that you are trying to do the best for the dog, but from what I have seen, overkill is an obvious adjective. By the way....our puppy's name is Emma.

Hi,
Glad to hear you found a pup and are happy.
I myself worked in animal rescue, and saw first hand what happens if the "hoops" aren't followed. The dogs end up back in rescue, sometimes with issues (separation anxiety, etc.) that they may not have had when adopted out. Good rescuers, no matter what breed of dogs they rescue, (especially those rescues that are foster homes as opposed to shelters, as fosters really know the animal that lives with them), are only looking out for the best interest of the animal. Sometimes that means not adopting out to a home, an animal that the rescuers just don't feel will be good for the home. It doesn't mean that a family is not a good family; it just means that a particular dog is maybe not the right one for their home. The rescuers work hard, dedicating their lives to finding the right ‘forever home’ for a pet. They take these animals under their wings and protect them, until they feel that an appropriate home is found. This can sometimes take a long time.
Also, home visits are a MUST with most reputable groups, for the safety and welfare of the animal.

We WOULD have been a very good match for a very hyper dog. Our pup WAS in RESCUE AND FOSTER and NOT just a shelter. Unfortunately, YOUR dog wasn't LUCKY enough to get US! Sorry, another lucky rescue/foster WAS.

I often gave him dog biscuits, he was such a loving and well behave dog, would jump up on me lick my face, sit in front of me and shake. He is a beautiful dog and I wish I could of adopted him, but I know now that is not possible, I only hope who ever adopts him will love him and take good care of him as he always had a place in my heart. And I will never forget him. Checking to see if he has been adopted yet. I still wish that I could of. I look up into our back field and can still picture Navaar running across the field to my house, coming to the front of the house barking to let me know he is there. I open the door give him a biscuit or two, let him go into our back yard that is fenced in to play with my 2 lab's. I sure do miss you Navaar, and think of you often. When I mentioned his name to my dog Molly, she perks up her ears and goes to look across the field where he use to run. She remembers you also and misses you. I hope who ever adopts you will take very good care of you and love you as much as I could have. I will never forget you, love your neighbor, shirley

I had the privilege of adopting a ten year old collie two years ago. I was on the fence about adopting an older collie, but once I saw Baxter, it was love at first sight. Though I only had him for just over a year before he died, it was a magnificent year! He loved us, and we loved him to pieces. Never, ever do I regret taking him in even though we didn't have him as long as we hoped we would.

Though it's been a year now that he's been gone, I miss him immensely. He was my best bud.

Keep up the good work!
