As you may be aware, Collies have a high sensitivity to the drug - Ivermectin – but did you know that Imodium AD (and many other drugs) have Ivermectin or Ivermectin properties in them that we may not be aware of when treating our collies?
The reason we are finding out about Imodium is an acquaintance has just lost her 18-month old collie after the vet treated a bout of diarrhea with it.
The League already discourages the use of Heartguard or any heartworm medication associated with Ivermectin. We’ll keep trying to educate you and ourselves about the dangers as we become aware.
Listed below are two very interesting links that give more details about what Vets and Study Groups have found so far.
The first one is the Collie Health Foundation. http://www.colliehealth.org/
Once at this site, go to their site map and look for “The Ivermectin Story” in the table of contents.
This second site gets a little more technical. It’s from the Washington State University – College of Veterinary Medicine. http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/announcements/ivermectin/index.asp
American Working Collie has a posting of its own and so does the Collie Club of America. Please check out some of these articles and be aware of this hidden danger!
