AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Dr. Catherine Ryan has 30 years experience that span practice, education, administration and service.  She is a retired U.S. Army Major, a registered nurse, certified nurse midwife, and certified nurse educator. She practiced midwifery in the military and had a full service private practice. In addition to direct patient care nurse positions, and academic positions at the undergraduate and graduate level, she directed the Army’s OB/GYN nurse specialty course, served as faculty in an OB/GYN medical residency program, and held numerous positions in nursing administration in acute care facilities.

CURRENT PROJECTS:  

Dr. Ryan is currently the Director of Nursing and Health Sciences at Hartnell College, Salinas CA. She administrates the registered nursing, vocational nursing, emergency medical technician, phlebotomy and certified nursing assistant programs. In her tenure as Director of the Nursing Program, she doubled the number of nursing graduates and decreased attrition from 30% to 7%.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:

Dr. Ryan’s teaching experience includes teaching at the community college, baccalaureate and graduate level in leadership and management, obstetrics and women’s health. She has expertise in designing and teaching intensive courses both in theory and clinical practice. Dr. Ryan secured over $550,000 in grants in the past year that were utilized to create a Nursing Student Success Coordinator position and to begin development of a High Fidelity Clinical Simulation Laboratory. Experience also includes teaching a post-graduate Leadership and Management in Nursing course in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam through the Friendship Bridge Nursing program, and presenting at international conferences in Bangkok, Thailand and Seoul, Korea on Women’s Health issues.  Her doctoral work was a study of “Nursing Focused Community Health Initiatives in Viet Nam.”

CREDENTIALS:

Dr. Ryan holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Case Western Reserve University, and a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  She is a Certified Nurse Educator with the National League of Nurses, a Neonatal Resuscitation Regional Trainer, a Hospital Perinatal Bereavement Coordinator and Counselor.
