10-Inch Rodman, M1861
-
Charged with improving endurance of heavy ordnance, Thomas Jackson Rodman of the US Army, revolutionized the casting of large hollow cylinders. The cast iron was poured into the mold around a water-cooled core, the concept being to freeze the molten metal from its bore outward, pushing impurities toward the exterior. Rodman guns were also cast with ratchets, not knobs, to adjust elevation.
