LICENSE EXAM PREPARATION BIBLIOGRAPHY

EXAM PREPARATION BIBLIOGRAPHY

BTA’s license exam preparation materials offer well focused, concise presentations of key concepts and core practice principles, drawn from many hundreds of sources.  Exam preparation materials are designed as a review, used to clarify key points and serve as a refresher.

Some exam candidates prefer to study directly from the source.  Others, perhaps those who have not  been previously exposed to important exam content in their course work or by their clinical supervisors, might want to read further on some topics of special interest.

Here is a list of readings that other exam candidates have found especially helpful.

CLINICAL ASSESSMENT

Brenner, C.  An Elementary Textbook of Psychoanalysis.  Garden City, NY: Doubleday Anchor Books, 1957 (although psychoanalysis, per se, is not a major focus of state license exams, many exam candidates who have not had any previous exposure to psychoanalytic concepts of personality assessment have found this to be a very clear presentation of these concepts)

Hales, R. And Yudofsky, S.  Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry (4th or subsequent editions), Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Publishing, 2003 or subsequent.

Hepworth, D.H., et al.  Direct Social Work Practice: Theory and Skills, 2002 or subsequent editions (see chapters on Assessment).

Kaplan, H. And Sadock, B.  Synopsis of Psychiatry, (6th or subsequent editions), Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins, 1991 or subsequent.

DIAGNOSTIC FORMULATION

Spitzer, R. et al.  DSM IV Casebook (4h or subsequent editions).  Washington DC: American Psychiatric Association, 1994 or subsequent.

Zero to Three.  Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders in Infancy and Early Childhood.  Revised edition (DC:0-3R).  Washington, DC: Zero to Three Press, 2005.

TREATMENT PLAN DEVELOPMENT

American Psychiatric Association.  Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders.  American Psychiatric Association, Washington, DC, 2000.

Bergin, A. and Garfield, S..  Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change, 4th Edition.  John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1994.

RESOURCE COORDINATION

Hepworth, D.H., et al.  Direct Social Work Practice: Theory and Skills, 2002 or subsequent editions (especially see chapter on “Developing Resources, Planning, and Advocacy as Intervention Strategies).
