Anyway... I don't have a ton of info about scale lengths, but the basic principle is pretty simple. The scale length of a stringed instrument is based from nut to bridge. The halfway point is the first octave of the string. The only thing I can deduce, is that longer string lengths tend to serve those with longer fingers. I don't know what the other advantages would be. I've been told that with guitars, the average Fender uses a longer scale length than the average Gibson. Perhaps a good luthier's site or one of our other forum contributors can elaborate on this a bit more!
