Looking for a celebratory dish to usher in the New Year?
A Southern tradition serves up black-eyed peas on New Year's Day to ensure good luck throughout the year, along with ham, which is a symbol of prosperity. A more Zone-friendly tradition comes from the Chinese, who make cabbage dishes on January 1 because cabbage leaves represent paper currency — or so the story goes.

Here, just for fun, is the Zone's delicious Cabbage Soup —
it's guaranteed to keep you warm (if not wealthy) this year.

Happy New Year!

Thick Old-Fashioned Cabbage Soup

Ingredients
3 soy hot dogs, sliced
3/4 cup celery, diced fine
1/2 cup carrots, diced fine
3/4 cup onions, diced fine
1/2 cup tomato, diced fine
2 cups cabbage, shredded
1 cup diced mushrooms
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 cups chicken stock (or broth)
3/4 clove garlic, minced
Dash caraway seeds
1 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar
Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, and then simmer for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally until all vegetables are tender.
