No one ever asks to be impaired or to have their ability to work limited. Yet, that is often an unforeseeable consequence of life. In fact, statistics say that as much as 25% of the population may become disabled during their lifetime. This is where social security and a social security attorney can help.
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. One of the main goals of the Social Security program is to pay social security financial benefits to those who are disabled; in essence, providing them with a 'safety net.'
Both the SSDI and the SSI programs are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have an impairment and meet certain medical criteria qualify for benefits under those programs.
Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.
