Acoustic Emission Waveguide
Stud-welded AE waveguide. Typically 1-ft long 1/4" 304 SS shank. Provides sound coupling and temperature isolation for the AE sensor.

Studgun arrangement with special side-mount chuck fixture for studwelding of AE waveguides to high energy piping. Waveguides have been studwelded during offline and online conditions with good success.

Brown 3 SH SEM Creep damage in…
Acoustic Emission found activity during online conditions in SH link piping segments at Kentucky Utilities Brown #3 unit in 1997-98. One section was removed and investigated by EPRI. Sensitive phased array ultrasonics located indications in the area detected by AE monitoring. A 3" plug was sent to M&M Engineering (Austin, TX)for cryocracking analysis. This SEM photo at 5000x shows isolated early stage creep cavitation found in the weld centerline.

Early stage creep
Early stage creep damage in seam welds involves decohesion of inclusions and the growth of cavities around the decohered particles. Eventual linkage of these cavities leads to microcracking and eventual macrocracking.(After Henry, CE, unpublished, 1997)
