AET 5500 system
AET 5500 8-channel computerized acoustic emission data acquisition system used by AEC for online testing of high energy fossil piping.

Acoustic Emission Waveguide
Stud-welded AE waveguide. Typically 1-ft long 1/4" 304 SS shank. Provides sound coupling and temperature isolation for the AE sensor.

Sensor and waveguide .JPG
Field test engineer installing AE sensor in welded waveguide. An inert couplant, typically Dow high vacuum grease, is used to couple the sensor to the waveguide.

Studwelding AE waveguides
Studgun arrangement with special side-mount chuck fixture for studwelding of AE waveguides to high energy piping. Waveguides have been studwelded during offline and online conditions with good success.

Brown 3 SH SEM Creep damage inů
Acoustic Emission found activity during online conditions in SH link piping segments at Kentucky Utilities Brown #3 unit in 1997-98. One section was removed and investigated by EPRI. Sensitive phased array ultrasonics located indications in the area detected by AE monitoring. A 3" plug was sent to M&M Engineering (Austin, TX)for cryocracking analysis. This SEM photo at 5000x shows isolated early stage creep cavitation found in the weld centerline.

Early stage creep
Early stage creep damage in seam welds involves decohesion of inclusions and the growth of cavities around the decohered particles. Eventual linkage of these cavities leads to microcracking and eventual macrocracking.(After Henry, CE, unpublished, 1997)
